Description
I. W. KNAUSE.
SPRING-CLASP AND HOOK.
No. 191,686. Patented June 5,1877.
NPEIERS, FHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASMNGTON. U C.
PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN W. KNAUSE, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING CLASPS AND HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,686, dated June 5, 1877;
application filed May 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. KNAUSE, of Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring'Olasps and Hook- Attaehments for securing price-marks and labels to goods and various articles; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of the cut blank 5 Fig. 2, a side view of the spring-clasp complete. Fig. 3 represents the spring-clasp applied to a shirt-collar and holding a card or label. Fig. 4 is a side view of the clasp with a hook attachment; and Fig. 5 a view of the hook detached, showing its construction.
The object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive and convenient device for attaching cards for price-marks and labels to goods and articles of various kinds, whereby said cards may be readily applied and detached without defacing the goods or articles, and the whole suspended for exhibition, when desired.
The invention consists, first, in forming a duplex spring'clasp from a single piece of material-sheet metal preferred; and, second, in applying thereto a suspension-hook, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, A, Fig. 1, represents a blank, of sheet metal or other suitable material, with a portion of its surface cut through, as shown at a a. This blank may be produced in any desired shape, and cut, as at a a, at one operation by a suitable punch and die. B, Fig. 2, represents a side or edge view of the spring-clasp complete. The jaws b b have corrugations formed in the outer divided surface of the blank, and take up and shorten the same, which causes the straight or central portion to overlap and form the opposing clasping-jaws C O.
The latter step of the process of constructing this device of sheet metal may be performed by stamping in suitable dies, and at one or more operations, in a manner well understood by those skilled in the art.
D, Fig. 4, represents the clasp provided with a hook, d, which serves to suspend the same, with the article and card attached, (as shown, for example, in Fig. 3,) in a show-window or other desirable place. The construction of the hook cl is shown in Fig. 5, the lateral projections c e being arranged to engage beneath the outer or corrugated jaw 11, which prevents the hook from becoming detached.
This device may be constructed of any suitable material possessing sufiicient rigidity and elasticity to retain its shape and maintain the cards and articles to which it may be applied. The surfaces may be ornamented, if desired, by engraving the faces of the stamps or dies, and the same produced in the operation of forming the device.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, the duplex spring-clasp B, constructed of a single piece of sheet metal or other suitable material, and having its jaws I) 1) formed in the margin of the blank A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the spring-clasp B and hook d, substantially as described.
JOHN W. KNAUSE.
