No. 893,666. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed April 1, 1908; Serial No. 424,602.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN M. SILVERMANN, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in clips for securing display cards in boxes.
In packing goods such as suspenders, neckties, toilet articles, and similar goods and notions in display boxes, it is customary to secure them to a card, and in some instances these cards have been held in place within the display box by strings or ribbon secured to the box and tied around the card. This method of securing the cards within the box, is comparatively expensive and in cases where the article is folded around the card, as in the case of suspenders, it necessitates the removal of the card in order to remove a pair of suspenders therefrom, and its replacement in the box after the removal of the suspenders.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for holding the card during shipment, and for preventing it from falling from the box when exposed for sale in show cases or on counters, and it consists in removable clips adapted to be clamped to the sides or ends, or both, of the box, each having an integral toe overlapping the edge of the card.
- In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in elevation of a suspender box showing the display card held in place by my improved clips. Fig. 2 is a view in section through two of the clips, and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are views of modified forms of clips.
1 represents a box, 2 the removable display card and 3 the clips removably securing the card in place within the box, and preventing movement during shipment, or accidental displacement when the goods carried by the card are on display.
This clip is made of metal either flat, round or any other shape in cross section, and comprises a body 3 adapted to overlap the inner and outer sides of the rim of the box and be held thereon by frictional contact, and an integral toe 4, of suflicient length to overlap and rest on the outer surface of the card, thus holding the latter securely in place.
These clips are preferably made as shown in the drawings, but I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to such shapes and forms, as a metal clip of any con struction that will engage the edge or rim of the box and be held thereon by frictional contact, and provided with a toe adapted to overlap and rest on the top face of the card will answer all purposes, and come within the spirit of my invention.
The simplest form of clip is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and consists of an inverted U-shaped body, and a toe integral with the free end of one member of said body, the two members being parallel and sufliciently close together to impinge against the rim of the box when forced thereon.
These clips can be removed and replaced, thus permitting the cards to be readily removed and replaced.
I-Iaving fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
In combination with a box and a card to which the articles to be displayed are attached so as to be removable with the card, clips, each comprising a U -shaped spring body, the inner member of which is of a length approximately the depth of the box,
the said bodies overlapping and clamped to the rim of the box, and an integral toe on each clip, the said toes overlapping the card at opposite sides or ends and holding it in place against the bottom of the box.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWIN M. SILV ERMAN N.
