UNIT PACKAGE; 1
specificationof Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 20,1921.
Application filed January 6, 1919. Serial No. 269,739.. H
To all whom it may concern. r
Beit known that I, GUsrAr AWNALLIL a citizen. oft-he United statea residing at Scotch Plains, county of Union, State of NewJ'ersey, have invented an Improvement in Unit Packages, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying. drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts. f
This invention relates to improvements in unitpackages of superposed articles which it is cesirableto secure together without in closingthem in a'wrapper or carton, such as a package of sealing rings for ars.
@ne of the objects of the presentinvention is to provide a unit package of super posed articles, such as rings, in which the means transversely encircling and retaining said articles in assembled position shall be capable of receiving and displaying such identifying indicia and other information as may be desirable.
Another object of the invention is to provide a unit package comprising a series of superposed articles having binding strips capable of a permanent set when bent and provided with a sufficiently broad surface to prevent injury to the articles to which they are applied.
A further object of the invention 15 to provide a unit package of hollow articles in which the ends of the binding strips are in terlocked or otherwise secured together preferably within the hollow central portion of thepackage.
Other objects of the invention and the nature thereof will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing and will be particularly 7 pointed out in the claim.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which p Figure 1 is a perspective view of a unit package of superposed fiat rings, embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing.
the binding strip embracing said rings an having its ends interengaged to lock them together;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of the binder. 1
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a unit package of superposed articles-havinga binding member presenting a surface of s'uflicient area to receive and display desired indicia such as trade names, trademarks and attractive advertis ing slogans which will catch the eye of'a prospective purchaser and thereby serve to promote the sale of the package. 7 Thebinding memberv may also bear identifyingin:
dicia such as price marks, sizemarks and other information which will aid the merchant in the identification and .selection of the articles.-
A further objectof the invention; is to provide a unitpackage having one or more 1 binding members providedwith sufiicient.
area to receive and display indicia, said binding members being formed of. apliable material capable when bent of retaining a permanent set, the ends of said bindingmembers preferably being provided with interengaging portions which will lock the blnding member firmly in its engagement with the. articles.
- ably a dozen, superimposed rings 1 for sealng ars which be held together by one or preferably by a plurality of binder strips 2 disposed at circumferential points in the superimposed position of said rings;
The binders 2 are of suflicient width to receive and display desired indicia and preferably are formed of or comprise a material capable of retaining a permanent set When bent. The preferred form of binder which is illustrated herein comprises two plies of paper 3 pasted or cemented together and inclosing between them a wire or bar 1 of pliable substantially non-resilient material so that when the binder is bent around the superimposed articles it will lie closely adjacent the edges or walls of said articles without any tendencyto spring away. 7 The construction of this binder may be similar to that disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,073,828, granted Sept. 28, 1913, for inless marking ticket, the non-resilient sti ening member being made of such character as to perform t e fun t n req ire The binder when applied to the superimposed rings as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a base portion 5 which engages the flat surface of the lowermost ring,va side portion Gwhich extends alongside and contacts With the outer cylindrical surface of the superimposed rings, a transverse upper portion 7 which engages the flat upper surface of the top ring and an inner side portion formed of the two end ortions 8 and 9 of the binder which when ocked' forms a substantially continuous support for the inner Walls of the superimposed rings. The
end portion 8 of the binder is bent back is'sec'ured upon the rings which will hold them from lateral displacement even if a single binder is used. Preferably however,
the rings are held together at a plurality of circumferential points in the superimposed position of the rings by binders of the character specified bent snugly around transversely of the rings. Two of such binders are illustrated in Fig. l as applied to diametrically opposite portions ofthe superimposed rings. v c
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I v
A unitpackage comprising a plurality of superimposed flat rings secured togetherrby a plurality versel t ere-around com IlSlIl lies of paper presenting a surface to receive identi f 111 indicia and llZLVlIl a flexible nonresilient member there-betweem capable of a permanent set and of sufficient rigidity-to retain said rings firmly i-n superimposed poof flat binding strips bent transa sition and having hooked interengaging end 7 portions lying closely adjacent the inner walls of said superimposed rings whereby lateral displacement thereof is prevented.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
