Application October 11-, 1933, Serial No. 693,073
4 Claims.
This invention relates to advertising packets of the kind in which individually removable splints are contained in a foldable flexible cover, such, for example, as commercial book matches wherein 5 the basal ends of cards of matches are covered by,
and secured by a staple to, the short end-fold of an elongated strip of relatively stiff flexible material which provides a cover flap foldable upon or unfoldable from the front of the splints to confine or expose the contained matches, as desired. The free end of the flap when it is folded upon the matches is tucked and thereby removably held between the integral base portion of the matches and the overlying short fold of the cover strip.
Splint packets of the kind referred to are large- 1y used for\ advertising articles of merchandise, and since the packets are generally distributed gratuitously by tradesmen, it is important not only that any structural improvement in the packets shall be characteristic and distinctive to promote their advertising value, but also that their manufacturing cost shall not be increased.
It is the object of my invention to provide an advertising splint packet which well fulfills the requirements mentioned, that is to say, a packet on the 'cover of which is conspicuously displayed in a manner to arrest the attention of the user a pictorial representation of the article to be advertised. The cover of the packet, in an efficient form of my invention, is provided with a tongue or tab-like member bearing a co-related portion of the pictorial representation and corresponding in profile with the outline of such portion, which member is conveniently cut or stamped in the body of the cover, and affords, in addition to its advertising feature, a simple and convenient means for releasing and opening the flap when it is desired to remove any of the contained matches or other splint articles, from the packet. Exemplifying forms of packets embodying my invention will be hereinafter described and the scope of the invention then expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a match packetflap lustrating a hat as the subject of the advertisement.
' Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing the flap open.
Fig. 6 is a view illustrating a bottle containing medicine or the like as the subject of adver-' tisemen't.
The subjects of advertisement shown are merely illustrative, as obviously any of a wide variety of objects can be strikingly portrayed on a packet embodying the principle of my invention.
The book-match package illustrated in the drawing as a form of splint packet to which my invention can be efliciently applied, comprises match combs or cards A and a flexible cover B. The match combs or cards (two of which, one imposed on the other, are usually employed) consist of groups of individually removable match splints I having ignitible heads H and uncut connecting or base portions l2; and the cover consists of an elongated strip of cardboard forming a back portion whereof one end is folded upon and secured to the marginsof the match cards to constitute a retaining member l3, and whereof the other end is extended beyond the heads of the matches to constitute a flexible closure flap [4 which may be folded over upon the matches. The retaining fold I3 is fastened at its mid-portion to the margins of the combs or cards, usually by a clenched staple l5, and such fold is provided with an external coating of ignition material, as [6. The closure flap I4 is intended to be temporarily-clamped in folded position by pushing its free end well under that of, the retaining fold.
According to my invention, the cover B is provided intermediate its ends with a tongue 11 which is normally directed toward that end of the cover to which the base portion of the splints are secured-which tongue is conveniently cut in the body of the cover. The base line of the tongue extends transversely of the cover and is so positioned as to lie at the front of the top of the packet when the closure flap is folded over the match heads and upon the exposed front of the matches, in which case the tongue is swung upwardly so as to project beyond and in the same plane as the front closure flap, thus serving as an eflicient finger tab whereby the 1 flap can be conveniently released and opened to permit the detachment of a match. The outline or contour of the tab is variable depending upon the form of the article to be advertised on the exterior surface of the flap.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the tongue or tab member is curved to correspond with the outline or contour of. the collar portion of a shirt, such portion being printed on or otherwise applied to the face of the tab and the body portion of the shirt being displayed on the face of the flap, the edges of which fiap define the outline of the shirt body. Therefore the outer faces of the cover flap and tab member conjointly present a unitary pictorial representation of the article to be advertised, and since the co-related tab portion of the subject of the pic- 4 ture is upstanding and in profile the attention of the user of the packet is immediately drawn to the subject, thus promoting the advertising value of the packet.
In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the tongue or tab member is shaped to correspond with the outline or contour of the crown of'a hat, which hat portion is illustrated on the face of the tab while the rim portion and other parts of the pictorial representation are illustrated on the face of the'flap.
In the construction represented in-Fig. 6 the tongue or tab member is'shaped to correspond with the outline or contour of a bottle neck and cap, which portions are illustrated on the face of the tab while the body of the bottle is illustrated on the cover flap. v
From the foregoing it will be seen that a packet embodying my invention conspicuously displays in profile, in a neat and attractive manner, a portion of the subject of the pictorial advertisement appearing on the book cover; that such profile portion is so positioned as to afford a sim- 1. As a new article of manufacture an advertising packet comprising a cover of flexible material and a plurality of individually removable splints,
said cover including a flap portion foldable over the free upper ends of and upon the front of the splints and having a tab portion in hinged relation to the body of the cover at the fold thereof common forms adjacent the free ends of the splints thereby protising packet comprising a cover of flexible material and apluralityof individually removable splints, said cover including a fiap portion foldable over the free upper ends of and upon the front of the splints and having a tab portion in hinged relation to the body of the cover at the fold thereof adjacent the free ends of the splints thereby projecting upwardly beyond the splints when the fiap is thus folded, the outer faces of said flap and .tab portions bearing a pictorial representation of the article to be advertised, and said tab portion corresponding in profile with the outline of the portion of the pictorial representation thereon.
3. As a new article of manufacture an advertising packet comprising a cover of flexible material and a plurality of individually removable splints, said cover including a flap portion foldable over the free upper ends of and upon the front of the splints and having an integral tab portion cut from the cover material so as to extend upwardly beyond the splints when the flap is thus folded, the outer faces of said flap and tab portions bearing thereon a pictorial representation of the article to be advertised, and said tab portion corresponding in profile with the outline of the portion of the pictorial matter thereon.
4.'As a new article of manufacture an advertising packet comprising a cover of flexible material and a plurality of individually removable splints, said cover including a flap portion foldable over the free upper ends of and upon the front of the splints and having an integral tab portion cut from the cover material so as to extend upwardly beyond the splints when the flap is thus folded, the outer faces of said flap and tab portions bearing thereon a pictorial representation of the article to be advertised, and the profile of said tab portion and the edges of said flap corresponding with the outline of the associated pictorial matter.
