(Cl. 206-46) This invention relates to a device for displaying in played in a case from which a customer makes the se- =1 lection of the model and color desired and the seller then supplies a comb of that model and color from a stock maintained elsewhere. In addition to the fact that a bulky and expensive display case is required by such a system, the seller must give individual personal service to each customer buying a comb.

It is an object of this invention to provide a device whereby combs may be individually displayed in such a manner that the customer may serve himself by taking a comb from the display rack. It is another object of this invention to provide a display device upon which advertising, prices, trade-marks, or the like may be printed. Other objects will appear from the more detailed description of this invention.

The above objects are accomplished in accordance with this invention by blanking a sheet material, such as paper, into a three-section shape as shown in the attached drawings and assembling this shaped sheet material around the end of a comb in such a fashion that the comb is held tightly by the assembled device and can be hung vertically from a pin in a display card. The three-section blank comprises two side sections which may be folded on each other causing their outlines to match, and an inner section which is hidden by the side sections in the final assembly With a comb. In assembling the blank to the comb, the juncture between the inner section and its adjoining side section is inserted between adjacent teeth near the end of the comb and the two sections are then folded so as to lie on opposite sides of the comb and to extend beyond the end of the comb. The remaining side section is then folded around the back of the comb so as to lie on the outside of and to cover the inner section. A staple or other fastening device may then be applied to hold the two side sections and the inner section of this device in place. The comb is then securely held by the display device of this invention and may be hung from a pin or otherwise vertically attached to a display board or rack for sale to customers.

In the attached drawings Figure 1 represents a plan view of the display device of this invention as it is first prepared from a flat piece of sheet material.

Figure 2 is a side view of the device of this invention as it is attached to a comb for display purposes.

Figure 3 is an end view of the device of this invention as it is attached to a comb for display purposes.

By specific reference to Figure 1 it may be seen how the device of this invention is prepared prior to its attachment to a comb. The device may be made of any of several varieties of sheet material such as paper, cellophane, metal foils, plastic films and the like. The device is comprised of three sections of which sections 1 and 2 are matching side sections and are joined by a first narrow section 4. The narrow section 4 is defined by two scored folding lines 5 in such a fashion that when sections 1 and 2 are folded upon each other by folding along lines 5 the outer peripheries of sections 1 and 2 will match. Section 3 is joined to section 2 by a second narrow section 6 which in turn is defined by scored folding lines 7. Section 3 is an inner section, in that, when the device of this invention is assembled with a comb, inner section 3 is not visible and therefore the configuration of section 3 may be any desired shape, so long as when it is folded along lines 7, the periphery of section 3 will not extend outside of the matching peripheries of section 1 and section 2. Section 3 is separated from section 2 throughout about one-half its width by a narrow slot 8 which extends from section 4 to a point 9 about midway between section 4 and the outer edge 10 of adjoining sections 2 and 3. The axis of slot 8 and the axis of section 6 define a line which is substantially at a right angle with fold lines 5. As will be described below, the shape of slot 8 is made to be substantially the same as the cross section of the back of the comb which is to be displayedby this device. In a like manner, narrow section 6 is made so that its width corresponds closely to the width of the teeth of the comb which is to be displayed, and narrow section 4 has a width corresponding closely to the thickness of the back of the comb which is to be displayed.

Sections 1 and 2 may be appropriately printed or otherwise decorated to include such items as trademarks, prices and the like. It may also be seen that the outer peripheries of sections 1 and 2 may have any of several desired shapes for decorative purposes, and there may be many ornamental variations of the surface of sections 1 and 2.

In Figure 2 of the attached drawings it may be seen how the device described in Figure 1 is attached to a comb 11. Narrow section 6 is inserted between adjacent teeth near one end of the comb in such a fashion that the roots of the teeth are at 9, the back of the comb fitting into slot 8 and the tips of the teeth lying near outer edge 10. Folds may then be made along lines 7 so that sections 2 and 3 lie on opposite sides of the end of the comb. Thereafter folds may be made along lines 5 so that section 1 lies adjacent to, but on the outside of, completely covering, section 3. In order to hold the three sections in this relationship a suitable fastening means may be applied such as a staple at 13. Other fastening means such as adhesives, tapes, clips, etc., may be used for the same purpose. It may then be seen that the comb cannot slip out of this device and that the comb may only be separated from the device by removing the fastening means 13 or tearing the sheet material of this device. For purposes of enabling the combination of Figure 2 to be displayed on a card or the like a hole 12 may be punched through the assembled device and used for hanging this device from a hook or the like.

Figure 3 shows an end view of the assembly just decribed with reference to Figure 2. It may be seen from Figure 3 that narrow section 6 has its width and shape determined by the width and shape of the teeth, and in a same manner narrow section 4 has its width determined by the thickness of the comb back 11. Section 3 is shown lying inside and being covered by section 1.

This device is particularly suitable for displaying combs in a neat and accessible fashion without the necessity of a relatively expensive display case and with the added advantage that advertising space is provided on the two visible side sections of this device. Furthermore, this device is particularly suitable for the modern selfservice type of stores.

It is not intended that this invention be limited in any way other than by the description contained in the following claims.

I claim: 7

1. As an article of manufacture a device adapted for displaying a comb comprising an integral flat sheet material shaped into two matching side sections joined by a foldable connection, and a third inner section joined by a foldable connection to one of said side sections, the inner section and its adjoining side section being separated by a narrow slot extending from the foldable conncction between the two side sections to a point about midway between said foldable connection and the outer edge of said adjoining side section, the inner section and its adjoining side section being joined by a foldable connection extending from the innermost reaches of said slot to said outer edge, the axis of said slot and the axis of the foldable connection joining the inner section to its adjoining side section defining a substantially straight line at a right angle to said foldable connection joining the two side sections.

As an article of manufacture a comb display device comprising a fiat sheet of paper cut into three sections, two of which are matching side sections joined to each other through a first narrow section scored for folding so that when said two side sections are folded along the scored lines the periphery of one of said side sections is superimposed upon the periphery of the other said side section; the third section being an inner section of similar shape but with smaller area than either of said side sections, and being joined to one of said side sections through a second narrow section scored for folding, said second narrow section being at substantially a right angle with said first narrow section, said inner section being separated from its adjoining side section by a narrow slot aligned with, and substantially the width of, said second narrow section, said slot extending from the foldable connection joining said side sections to a point about midway between the foldable connection joining the side sections and the outer edge of said side section and its adjoining inner section.

3. The combination of a comb and the display device described in claim 2, assembled so that said second narrow section lies between adjacent teeth near one end of the comb, the comb back fits into said slot, the inner section lying on one side of the comb, the side section adjoining said inner section lying on the other side of the comb, the other side section outside of, and on the same side of the comb as said inner section, all three sections being joined by a fastening means.
