Description

March 22, 1966 D. J. FREIMAN 3,241,738

PACKAGING SLEEVE Filed Sept. 1'7, 1964 w M W INVENTOR. David J. Frel'm an MK/ 5W A TTORNE Y United States Patent York Filed Sept. 17, 1964, Ser. No. 397,159 Claims. (Cl. 229--37) This invention relates to an easily printable cover sleeve for packaging, and more particularly to an open-ended tubular sleeve slidable over and lockably retainable on a carton, wherein such sleeve has a container removably secured to one side thereof.

In modern day marketing, it is common practice to promote the sale of ones product by offering a combination of goods at a reduced price. Usually such promotions are of a short duration and accordingly necessitate special dealer inventory during the promotional period so that those packages containing the promotional price may be replaced with standard packaging at the end of such period. Such procedure is not only met with disfavor by the retailer, but also requires extra handling thus increasing the cost of distribution.

My invention eliminates these problems by providing an inexpensive cover sleeve which is slidable over a standard packaging carton, and which has a container removably secured to a side thereof for marketing an auxiliary or accessory item with that contained in the carton. The sleeve may be provided with full color graphics to fully advertise the promotion and create point of sale buying. In addition, the removable container is complete in and of itself and may be removed from the sleeve for individual sale, such as at the end of the promotion. Further, the sleeve itself may be removed from the canton at the end of the promotion and the individual item packaged therein may be marketed at its original price. With my inventive concept, there is no need to repackage articles at the end of the promotion, since the retailer need only remove the sleeve from the carton and the container from the sleeve and market them separately.

It has thus been an object of my invention to provide a sleeve member having a container removably secured thereto wherein the member is slidable over a standard carton so as to market a combination of articles at a package price.

A further object of my invention has been to provide a packaging sleeve removably slidable over a standard carton, wherein the sleeve has a container removably secured thereto so that the article packaged within the carton and in the container may be marketed either as a unit or separately as desired.

These and other objects of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the following disclosure and accompanying drawings in which:

FIGURE 1 is a plan view of a blank for forming a novel packaging sleeve embodying my invention.

FIGURE 2 is an assembled rear perspective view of the sleeve blank shown in FIGURE 1, illustrating the positionment of the container on the side wall thereof.

FIGURE 3 is a front perspective view of the sleeve shown in FIGURE 2 as it is being slid over a standard carton.

FIGURE 4 is a rear elevational view of the sleeve of FIGURE 2 shown in position upon a carton.

FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of the sleeve showing its container separated therefrom.

FIGURE 6 is a fragmental sectional view taken along lines 6-6 of FIGURE 2.

Referring now to the drawings, and particularly FIG- URE 1, a blank 10 is shown having a front panel 11, back panel 12, side panels 13, 14, and a glue flap 15. The front panel 11 may be provided with a removable strip 16 Patented Mar. 22, 1966 secured thereto by perforation 17. Side panel 14 is provided with upper and lower retaining flaps 18, 19 secured thereto by fold lines 20, 21.

Removably secured to the sleeve glue flap 15, by means of perforated line 22, is a container blank 23 having a front panel 24, back panel 25, side panels 26, 27, a glue flap 28, and end closure flaps 29.

As shown in FIGURE 2, the panels 11, 12, 13 and 14 are foldable along suitable score lines to form a sleeve 30, and panels 24, 25, 26 and 27 are also foldable along suitable score lines to form a container 31 secured to the sleeve along the perforated line 22 of glue flap 15. As shown in FIGURES 5 and 6, a pressure sensitive adhesive 32 is applied between end flap 13 of the sleeve 30 and back panel 25 of the container 31 to securely maintain the container in position upon the sleeve.

Referring now to FIGURES 3 and 4, the operation of the sleeve becomes apparent. As shown in FIGURE 3, a carton 33 having a standard manufacturers joint 34 is shown having the sleeve 30 applied thereto by being slid thereover. The retaining :tabs 18, 19, are folded along crease or fold lines 20, 21, so as to lie along the inner surface of side panel 14. As the sleeve is slid over the carton 33, a recessed portion 35 of each of the tabs 18, 19 abutably engages the manufacturers joint 34 to lockably retain the sleeve on the carton 33. When so positioned, the article within the carton 33 may be merchandised with the article retained in the container 31 as a unit with the sleeve containing the necessary graphics to adequately set forth the advantages of the unit price. In addition, if desired, the tab or tear strip 16 secured to front panel 11 may be removed along perforated line 17 by the dealer, such as when the strip contains special information to him, or by a consumer when the strip contains the purchase price and the package is purchased for a gift.

Although the container 31 is securely attached to the sleeve 30 not only by the perforated connection 22, but also by the pressure sensitive adhesive 32, the container may be removed from the sleeve and marketed as an individual item if so desired. Further, the sleeve 30 may be removed from the carton 33 so that the item contained therein may also be marketed as an individual item. Accordingly, it can be seen that replacement packaging is not necessary when the promotion of the two items as a unit is no longer desired.

Although I have set forth a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A packaging sleeve slidable over a standard carton comprising, an open-ended tubular member having bounding wall portions secured together by a glue flap, a container removably connected to said glue flap along a perforated line, and said container being releasably secured to a side panel of said sleeve adjacent said glue flap by pressure sensitive adhesive means.

2. A packaging sleeve slidable over and lockably retainable on a standard carton comprising, front, back, and side wall panels secured together by a glue flap to form an open-ended tubular member snugly slidable over the carton, said glue flap being secured to one of said side panels, a container attached to said glue flap along a perforated line and removably secured to said one side panel adjacent said glue flap, and a pair of locking tabs formed integrally with the other of said side panels foldable inwardly thereof to cooperably engage the manufacturers joint of the carton upon which the sleeve is positioned and lockably retain the sleeve thereon.

3. A packaging sleeve slidable over a standard carton and having a container removably secured thereto, which comprises, a tubular member having front, back, and side panels secured together by a glue flap, said glue flap being secured to one of said side panels, a container having front, back, and side panels together With end closure flaps secured to said glue flap along a perforated line, pressure sensitive adhesive means securing the back panel of said container to said side panel of said tubular member, upper and lower locking flaps formed on the other side panel of said tubular member, said locking flaps being foldable within said tubular member along the inner surface of said other side panel, and each of said locking flaps having a recessed portion for cooperably engaging the manufaoturers joint of a carton upon which the tubular member is positioned and locking such member thereon.

4. In combination with a standard carton having a manufacturers joint, a cover sleeve snugly positioned over said carton comprising, front, back, and side panels secured together by a glue flap to form an open-ended tubular member, a locking tab formed on the upper and lower end of one of said side panels foldable along a grease line so as to lie between the inner surfaces of said side panel and the carton upon which the tubular member is positioned, and each of said locking flaps having a recessed portion cooperable with the manufacturers joint of said carton to lockably retain the sleeve thereon.

5. The combination as defined in claim 4 wherein the container having front, back and side panels together with end closure flaps is formed integrally with said glue flap along a perforated line, and a pressure sensitive adhesive secures the back panel of said container to the other side panel of said tubular member.
