lo it known that I, 'lunornin Pris'rnn, a citizen oi the United States, residing; at Chi cage, in the county oi Cool; and State of lilinois, have invented an Improvement in Ornament-lug Glass, of which the following is a specification.

ilollow articles, such as letters, usually of metal, have been caused to adhere to the surface of glass, and solid letters and other an ticles of an ornamental character have been applied both to the outer and the in nor surfaces of windows or plates of glass.

The present inyention relateslio the ornamental character that is given to the hollow article that is ailixed to the surface of the window or plate of glass. in my present invention the article to be ftiilXOd to the glass is made hollow and the hollow or concave side is filled with pieces of broken glass or prisms or pieces of ornamental 1naterlals,either plain, SllV0-l(3(l, gll(l(3tl, or colored, and an adhesive material is employed for holding the pieces togeth rwitlun the hollow letter or ornament and. for causing such hollow letter or ornament to adhere to the surface of the glass.

lly this improvement ornamental or artistic letters in great variety can be produced or the glass ornamented by vines, scrolls, leaves, or other designs, and the ornamental ellects and the colors employed are largely under the control of the artist, so that the desired effects can be produced and in great varieties from simiiarcr standard hollow letters or ornameuts that are filled in.

'l. he plate of glass is illustrated at A, and a hollow letter is indicated at 1-5. At C a hollow leaf and stem are illustrated and at D a hollow circular article similar to a watch glass or crystal, and it will be understood that the shapes employed are numerous and under the control of the artist.

In all instances the edges of the hollow article are tocoincide with the surface of the glass'te which they are to be attached. in other words, such edges are to be in a plane where the glass is ilat, or t-lieyare to be on rt ed when the plate of glass is a section of a cyla'cter-sueh, for example, as pieces of broken colored glass, ornamental pieces of mineral substanceaor pieces of material gilded or silvered--or foilor leaf metal maybeintrodueed on the inner surface of the letter or other article previous to the filling material being introduced or in between the layers of filling material, and an adhesive material-such as liquid gelatin glue, silicate of soda or varnish, or any mixture of such substances-45 to be filled into the conical article to cause the particles or pieces to adhere to the same and then to cause the article to adhere to the glass, plate, or other surface to which the article is to be allixed, and care should be taken to allow the cementing materials to dry, set, or harden suliiciently before the article is attached to the surface. It will usually be advantageous to allow such cementing materials to harden or set and then apply an adhesive material to the surface to cause the same to adhere to the plate of glass or other surface. Otherwise there would not be sufficient opportunity for the drying or setting of the adhesive materials made use of to cause the particles to adhere to each other and within the letter or other article.

' \Vhile this improvement is especially avail able with translucent or transparent letters or other devices attached to the surface of the window or plate of glass, the improvement is available where the letter or ornament is transparent and concave for receiving the ornamental materials to be seen through the transparent letter or other article, and in this case such ornaments may be applied to a wall or other opaque backing.

I claim as my invention 1. As a new article of manufacture, a letter or ornamental article hollow on the face side and with edges adapted to coincide with the plate of glass to which it is to be attached and such article filled in level with the edges I with ornamental pieces oi. glass or similar material and caused to adhere together and adapted to coincide with a plate of glass or 10 to the hollow article by an attaching cement other surface to which the letter or ornament or varnish, substantially as set forth. is to be attached, substantially as set forth. 2.
