WiR ywwaea I luv mik/ov %%M %'w/r/v UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
THOMAS W. BRAOHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,563, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. BRAOHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamenting Labels and Linings for Hats and Caps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof Y which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 represents a plan of one of my labels detached. Fig. 2 is a plan of a hat-lining ornamented according to my invention. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a label made of paper, ornamented with variegated metal, which is produced by subjecting Dutch or other metal leaf to the action of fire or acids; It consists, further, in a lining for hats or .caps provided with a paper center, which may be ornamented by printing thereon with bronze, silver-leaf, goldleaf, or variegated metal, said center being surrounded by ornaments produced on the lining by printing thereon with metal leaf or foil, as described in my patents No. 110,891, dated January 10, 1871, and N 0. 115,689, June 6, 1871.
In the drawing, A designates a label for a hat or cap, which is ornamented with Dutch or other metal leaf, variegated by means of fire or acids, and applied to the surface of the label by suitable dies, the variegated metal being placed upon the surface of the material on which the label is printed. By using embossing-dies the effect is or satin, which is ornamented by means of metal leaf or foil applied thereon in the manner described in my patents Nos. 110,891 and 115,689, above mentioned.
If the label is used in conjunction with the ornaments produced by leaf, I place the said label in the center, and in this case the label may be ornamented by means of bronze, or in any desirable manner. By using the ornamented paper center in conjunction with the ornaments formed by leaf, I am enabled to produce a large number of combinations at a comparatively cheap price.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A label for hats and caps ornamented by variegated Dutch or other metal leaf, as herein set forth. 7
2. A hat-lining, having a paper center, in combination with designs produced on said lining by means of leaf, substantially'as described.
This specification signed by me this 18th day of July, 1871.
