UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELISHA H. HOWARD, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
LETTER FOR SIGNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,303, dated December 29, 1885.
Application filed May 20,1884. Serial No. 132,157. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELISHA H. HOWARD, of the city and county ofProvidence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letters for Signs, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to metal letters which are intended to be'attached to wooden or other surfaces in such manner as toform signs and the like.
The object of my invention is to facilitate and simplify the operation of placing the letters, and to secure the same to the backing by simple and durable means.
To the above ends my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the letters, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a modified form of construction. Fig. 2 is a view of the same in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same.
The letter A has cast upon its reverse side any suitable number of projections, a, each of which is formed with a hole or eye extending clear through it.
a designatesa flexible wire, which is passed through the eye and is then bent and passed through the backing, as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the wire are also passed through two holes or eyes formed in a plug, A, which is of such form as to close the opening in the reverse side of the backing G, and has a flange to cover the sides of the opening, and the ends of the wire are either bent or twisted against the outer side of the plug, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to secure the letter to the backing.
The backing C may be a sign-board or a simple block, or the like.
The invention contemplates all alphabetical characters, and also numerals, punctuationmarks, small figures, and the like.
Any desired number of the attaching devices may be applied to each letter.
The body of the letter is of cast metal, and is formed in the usual manner of casting, so as to have the projections a.
The operation of attaching the letters to the backing-piece may be performed by a single workman without assistance, and such operation is greatly simplified, while the letters are securely and durably attached to the sign or backing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The letter provided with the projections a, in combination with the wires a and the plugs A, substantially as described.
ELISHA H. HOWARD.
