SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed July 3, 1882.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, VVILLIAM KAUFMANN, ot' the city, county, and State of New York, and AUGUST Donn, ofNewark, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Name-Plates, Signs, &c.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, making part of this specification.

This invention is in the nature of an improvement in name-plates, signs, 820.; and the invention consists in a name-plate or sign of cast metal, with ductile retaining-strips secured to its face, in combination with a series of letters and numbers having notches formed in them, 'whereby they are fixed to the plate by the indentation of the ductile strips, all combined, constructed, and arranged in the manner more particularly described hereinafter.

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.

The purpose 0tthis invention is to make expeditiously a durable sign or name-plate, and to that end I cast a plate of metal, A, of any desired form and size, with strips B, of thin sheet wrought-iron or other ductile metal, cast in or otherwise fixed to the face of the plate, and at right angles to the same. These ductile strips are arranged in parallel lines on the plate A, and are bent over in any suitable manner, so as to incline toward each other, thereby Patent No. 265,614, dated October 10, 1882,

When my plates and the letters and numbers are constructed substantially as described a name-plate or a sign can in a few moments be produced by placing the letters between the strips B in proper relation to spell the desired. name, and with due regard to the spacing of the letters, and when so arranged they are fixed immovably in place by simply indenting with a punch or other instrument the metal of the strips B into the notches a of the letters and numbers, and the name-plate or sign is then complete.

This character of sign or name-plate is particularly applicable to the purpose of marking graves, and to secure the plate to the earth for this purpose anchors D are fixed in any desirable manner to the under side ofthe name-plate. The sign or name-plate may be galvanized, japanned, or enameled, or be rendered non-oxidizable by any well-known process.

I do not claim broadly a sign or name-plate with parallel metal grooves and sliding letters fitting therein but Vhat I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A sign or name-plate, A, of cast metal, with parallel ductile metal strips B fixed thereto, in combination with a seriesot' letters and numbers, U, having notches a formed therein, and adapted to be fastened to the strips by indenting portions of the strips into the notches a, as and for the purpose described.
