To all whom it may ooncern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. WILLS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indexed Disks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to indexed disks for displays, adapted for use in advertising, and for imparting information or amusement, and especially to such devices embodied in the form of afan, all as will be fully set forth hereinafter, and subsequently claimed.

Fig. 4 is a plan View of the movable or index disk. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view partially broken away to illustrate the three disks embodied in the said form of my present invention. Fig. 6 is a detail view on an enlarged scale, illustrating the Construction of the indicator point, and Fig. 7 is a sectional View taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6'.

In the present form of my device, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, I have shown a fan, composed of a suitable handle A, bifurcated as shown at a a, to receive a series of disks, those in the present illustration being three in number, namely theouter stationary disks B, D, and an intermediate movable disk C. In this form, the stationary disks B D are each provided with a projection or elongation, marked b and d, respectively, through which and through the bifurcated handle 'A is passed a suitable pin e,

rendering the said disks B D stationary within said handle, as stated. Through the upper end of said bifurcated handle and through the center of all of the three disks shown there is passed another pin or analogous devicef which forms the pivotal point of the movable disk C. Obviously in place of the pin f an eyelet or other pivotal device may be employed. The disk B is provided with a suitable opening E, preferably located adjacent to its periphery at one side of the handleA and the disk D with a like opening F,

similarly located on the other side of said handle, as best shown in Fig. 5, and by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The movable disk C is also provided with a projection inarked which constitutes the base or support of the index or indicator, the latter consisting preferably of a netallic strip or strips G bent around or laid upon the projection o, and secured thereto, as by suitable rivets g g and terninating in offset ends H H adapted to einbrace the adjacent edges of the stationary disks B D, the said ends H each preferably terninating in an index point, h.

In the form ot' my invention illustrated in the present drawings, I have shown the same embodied in an advertising device, or business directory, the whole forming what may be called an advertising or directory fan. To this end the movable disk C is shown as provided with a series of business cards, one for each line of business represented, disposed all around the edge thereof, as shown at 'i %and the disk Bsuperinposed upon this disk C is provided, all around its edge with a series of radially disposed grad uations k k k, which are marked with the name or style of business represented by the aforesaid cards, the said graduations k and cards t' being so disposed relatively to each other that when the disk C is turned so as to bring any particular graduation on the disk B in line with the point h of the index or indicator on said disk C then card i of the particular kind of business named on said graduation will register with and show through the opening E of said disk B, all as plainly shown in Fig. 1. It is to be understood that the reverse side of the movable disk C is similarly provided with cards ti and that the face of the other disk D is provided with graduations k k correspondingly marked and located relative to said other cards, when the device is constructed with three disks, as shown in the drawings.,

Under sone circumstances the device may be made with only a single stationary disk, or if While well adapted, as shown, for advertising purposes, my device is not to be understood as necessarily confined thereto, as a series of pictures may take the place of the cards 'M the device consequently having a panoramic efiect, and similarly it may be utilized as a toy or Oracle, in an obvious man-' ner, or if desired, it may serve as a toy or Oracle on one side, and as an advertising medium on the other side, and while it is particularly adapted for use as a fan, the described disks may be utilized either with or without a handle, or With one of different i Construction from that shown, and while capable of greater utility (from the increased surface thereby aflorded) when the disks are of wholly circular shape, as shown, the device would still be operative and useful, within limits, if only a portion of the edges of the described disks were struck on the arc of a circle.

The described indicator device G H performs another function. This is the holding of the several disks together as best indicated in Fig. 7, and thereby (especially if the said indicator device is moved to a point in line with the handle) the said disks are kept from fiapping or separating when in use as a fan.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A series of disks, united by a pivot, one of said disks being movable thereon and one or more of them stationary, the movable disks being provided With a projecting index or indicator, and with a series of inscriptions or designs arranged upon its face and the superinposed stationary disk being provided with an opening therethrough, and a series of graduations or index marks, relatively arranged, whereby when the index is brought in line with any particular graduation or index mark, the inscription or design on the movable diskthereby indicated will show through the opening in the said stationary disk in combination with a handle, the said disks bebeing provided with a projecting index or indicator and with a series of inscriptions or designs upon its face, and the superimposedstatiouary disk being provided with an opening therethrough and with a series of graduations or index marks, arranged relatively to said inscriptions or designs on' the said movabledisk, and a strip or strips secured to the said index projection and ofisetted at the inner end to enbrace the edge of the said sutionary disk or disks.

3. The herein described device,consisting of a suitable bifurcated handle, a series of disks superimposed one upon the other within the fork of the handle and there united by: v v

pivot, one of said disks being movable thereon, and provided with a series of inscriptio or designs upon its face and the other disk. or disks being stationary, and provided with an opening for displaying one of said inscriptions or designs, and having index marks or graduations, and an indicator support proj ecting from the movable disk and carrying an ofisetted strip or strips secured thereto for enbracing the stationary disk or disks and terminating in an inwardly projectig index point or points.
