Description

H. W. McKEAN & R. J. OUVER.
CHANGEABLE EXHIBITOR.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.28, 1916.
Patented Aug. 7', 1917.

Guyana/14 HARRY W. MCKEAN AND ROY J. OLIVER, 0F PRESCOTT, ARIZONA.
CHANGEABLE EXHIBITOR.
Application filed December 28, 1916.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY W. MCKEAN and ROY J. OLIVER, citizens of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Yavapai and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Changeable Exhibitors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain iinprovements in changeable exhibitors and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use to indicate the tare weight of a freight car or the like.
The invention has also for an object to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby indication may be given as to the date when the tare weight of a car was last determined together with the station at which the car was last weighed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device'of this general character whereby indication may also be given as to the number of times the car has been weighed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a container having a removable cover and wherein a plurality of rotatable disks are supported within the container and provided with indications adapted to be exposed through suitable openings in the cover and wherein the cover is provided with means coacting with the disks for holding said disks against rotary movement when the cover is in closed position upon the container.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts our improved exhibitor whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of a change- Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 139,353.
able exhibitor constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention;
Fig. 2 is an elevational view with portions broken away of our exhibitor as herein embodied with the top or cover member removed; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. c
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a container preferably rectangular in form and having one face open, said container C being adapted to be secured to a freight car or the like in any desired manner and at any preferred location on the car. Coacting with the open face of the container C is the top or cover T hingedly engaged, as at 1, with. the upper wall of the container.
Rotatably supported within the container C adjacent the upper portion thereof are the disks 2 arranged in longitudinal alinement with the adjacent portions of said disks in overlying relation. The peripheral margin of each of the disks 2 has produced thereon the indications 3 preferably numerals arranged in sequence from 0 to 9. The indications 3 are preferably black While the disks 2 are white so that the indications will be conspicuous.
The top or cover T is'provided with the openings 4 through which the indications 3 are adapted to be exposed when the top or cover T is in closed position, and the indications 3 of the disks 2 exposed through the openings 4: are adapted to indicate the tare weight of a freight car or the like.
5 and 6 denote two disks rotatable about a common axis and positioned within the container C preferably below an end disk 2. The disks 5 and 6 are of differing diameters with the smaller disk 5 positioned in advance of the disk 6. For convenience in minimizing the size of the container C it is to be observed that the disks 5 and 6 partially overlie the adjacent disk 2.
The marginal portions of the disks5 and 6 are provided with indications 7 preferably letters of the alphabet and arranged in sequence from A to Z.
The indications 7 on the disks 5 and 6 are adapted to be exposed through a single opening 8 of the top or cover T when said top or cover is in closed position, and the indications 7 exposed through said opening 8 serve to indicate the station at which the Patented Aug. *7, 1917.
car was last weighed. In the accompanying drawings the letters LA are exposed through the opening 8 whereby notice is given that the car was last weighed at Los Angeles, as LA is a symbol representing the station at that city.
Also rotatably mounted Within the container C at a point below the second end disk 2 is the disk 9. The disk 9 also partially overlies the adjacent disk 2 for economy in space and is provided in its marginal portions with the indications 10 adapted to represent differing years and which indications are adapted to be exposed through the opening 11 in the top or cover T when said top or cover is in closed position. The indication 10 exposed through the opening 11 is intended to denote the year in which the car was last weighed.
Rotatably mounted within the container C below the intermediate disk 2 and partially overlying said intermediate disk 2 is the disk 12 having its marginal portion provided with the indications 1% herein disclosed as numerals arranged in sequence from 1 to 12. The indications 11 are adapted to denote a month of the year so that the indication 1-1 exposed through the opening 15 in the top or cover T will show the month in which the car was last weighed. Rotatably supported within the container C in advance of the disk 12 and concentric to said disk 12 is a smaller disk 16 provided in its marginal portion with the indications 17, such as representations of stars 'or the like and arranged in groups from one to five. The indications 17 are adapted to be exposed. through the opening 15 and the number of indications in the group exposed through the opening 15 will denote the number of times the car has been weighed.
Each of the disks 2, 5, 6, 9, 12 and 16 are provided with an annular series of openings 18, the openings in each disk being of a number equal to the indications thereon, and the openings in the disks 5, 6, 12 and 16 are adapted to register.
The inner face of the top or cover T is provided with a plurality of inwardly directed lugs or pins 19 adapted to be disposed within an opening of each of the aforesaid disks when the cover or top is in closed position, whereby it will be perceived Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
that said disks will be effectively held against rotation so that the indications exposed through the several openings in the top or cover T will be held against rearrangement until the top or cover has been swung into an inoperative or open position.
Any desired means may be employed, as indicated at 20, for holding the top or cover T in its closed position.
When the car is weighed at a station it will be understood that the top or cover T is thrown into an open position and the several disks suitably adjusted to expose through the differing openings the requisite indications, whereupon the top or cover T is again locked in closed position.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an exhibitor constructed in accordance with our invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reasonwe do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
A changeable exhibitor consisting of a container having one face open, a cover for said open face, disks rotatably mounted within the container, said disks being provided with indications, said cover member being provided with openings through which the indications are adapted to be exposed, and means carried by the cover and co-acting with all of the disks when the cover is in closed position for holding the disks against rotation.
'In testimony whereof we hereunto affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
