PROTRAGTOR 0B. DIVIDER. APPLIOATION FILED MAB.- 7, 190a.

M qirzi/ezzfar lUTT STATES PATENT OFFTQE.
DOMENIO M. OAMPANA, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PBOTRACTOR OR DIVIDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOMENIO M. OAMPANA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protractors or Dividers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lmprovements in protractors or dividers more particularly adapted for use with ceramics and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved, simple and efiicient device of this character for facilitating the dividing of the surface of an article into an equal number of divisions.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several features hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating the embodiment of the invention and in which Figure 1 is a view of one face of an im proved device of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this in vention. Fig. 2 is a view of the other face of the device. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing the manner of using this improved protractor or divider for dividing the exterior surface of a bowl or the like. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view showing the manner of using this improved device for dividing the surface of a vase or the like.
Referring more particularly to the drawing and in the present exemplification of the invention, the numeral 10 designates this improved device which is preferably constructed of a disk with its center removed to form a circular aperture. This disk may be constructed of any desired or suitable material and the periphery 11 of the disk is provided with a series of graduations 12 to indicate the various fractional parts of the periphery of the disk and for dividing the disk into a difierent number of equal parts.
The periphery 13 of the disk 10 adjacent the central aperture is also provided with a series of similar graduations 14 corresponding to the graduations 12 on the periphery of the disk, and the space between the inner periphery and the outer periphery may be rovided with a series of indicating characters 15 which designate the various graduations and these characters are arranged in Specification of Letters Patent.

series throughout the peripheries of the disk to indicate the respective graduations, that is, the graduations adjacent each of the peripheries of the disk which divide the disk into a predetermined number of equal parts will be designated by a similar character. One face of the disk, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings, is provided with the requisite number of graduations and indicating characters to divide the disk into a predetermined number of sections and the opposite face of the disk is provided with a similar series of graduations to divide this face into a predetermined number of sections, preferably differing from the number of sections into which the other face is divided and by means of which arrangement the capacity of the protractor or divider may be greatly increased. If desired, the space between the corresponding graduations on the outer periphery 11 and the inner periphery 13 may be divided with additional indicating characters to assist in directing the eye of the user to the proper graduation whereby the graduation may be quickly located.
In use when it is desired to divide the exterior surface of an article, such as a bowl 15, the protractor or divider may be placed over the article as shown in diagram in Fig. 3, so that the inner periphery 13 will rest against the outer face of the bowl and if it is desired to divide the surface of the bowl into, say, eight equal divisions, a mark may be placed upon the surface of the bowl opposite each one of the graduations on the periphery 13 adjacent or in line with which the numeral or indicating character 8 occurs. The same operation may be proceeded with when it is desired to divide the surface into any of the number of equal parts which areindicated by either face of the divider or protractor. It is to be understood that the protractor or divider is to be placed over the article in the position shown in Fig. 3 with the face of the protractor upon which occurs the desired number of graduations uppermost.
When it is desired to divide the surface of an article such as a vase 16, shown in diagram in Fig. 4, the same operation is proceeded with.
When the protractor or divider is placed in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, it may be adjusted to a suitable point or any desired point intermediate the top or bottom thereof and may be held in this position while the marks are being made upon the surface of the article in any desired face of the article and hold it Withone hand against displacement with relation to the article while the marks may be made around the outer or the inner periphery of the ring, which latter is formed by removing the center of the protractor, and adjacent the graduation which is indicated by the number designating the number of parts into which it is desired to divide the surface of the article.
If desired, and in order to facilitate the use of this improved device, there may be provided an additional series of indications 18 on each face thereof and which indications designate the number of parts into which the res (active surfaces of the protractor are div1 e Obviously in the manufacture of these devices any number'of them may be printed at the *same time in the form of a series of concentric members, after which the various members may be separated to produce rings or disks having their centers removed, of any desired diameter.
In order that the invention might be fully understood, the details of the foregoing embodiment thereof have been thus specifically described, but
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A protractor or divider, comprising a disk having its center removed to form a central aperture and having graduations on both faces adjacent its inner periphery to divide said periphery into a given number of equal parts, the graduations on one face indicating a different series of divisions from those on the op osite face, said protractor being adapted to e placed over the article to be divided so that thearticle will project into the aperture to cause the inner periphery of the divider to stand adjacent the surface of the article.
2. A protractor or divider comprising a disk having its center removed to form a central aperture, and having indications adjacent its inner periphery to divide said peequal parts, the indications on one face designating a different series of divisions from those on the opposite face.
4. A protractor or divider comprising a disk having its center removedto form a central aperture and having graduations to divide the edge of the disk adjacent the aperture into sections, said sections being arranged to constitute separate series and each series comprising a predetermined numberof equal parts.
5. A protractor or divider comprising a disk having its center removed to form a central aperture and having graduations to divide the edge of the disk adj acent the aperture into sections, the disk being also provided with graduations to divide the outer periphery into a corresponding number of sections, said sections beingarranged to constitute separate series and each series co m prising a predetermined number of equal parts.
6. A protractor or divider comprising a disk having its center removed to form a central aperture and having graduations to divide the edge of the disk adjacent the aperture into sections, the disk being also provided with graduations to divide the outer circumference into a corresponding number of sections, said'divider being adapted to be placed upon a surface to be divided, whereby the said surface may be divided into the same number of parts adjacent the outer and the inner circumference of the divider.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of 105 two subscribing witnesses, on this 3rd day of March A. D. 1908.
