UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SVERRE RIAN, OF DARLINGTON, WISCONSIN.
COMBINATION STENCIL-SHEET.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 22 1921 Application filed May 26, 1920. Serial No. 384,327.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SVERRE RIAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Darlington, in the county of Lafayette and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Stenoil-Sheets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a stencil sheet and the principal object thereof is to provide a stencil sheet wherein any combination of outlines of the letters of the alphabet and numerals may be formed.
Further the invention provides a combination stencil sheet wherein a system of guide lines are so combined on the sheet as to enable one to trace or form the outline of any letter or number.
The invention further provides a stencil sheet wherein guide marks or characters are arranged with respect to the various letters or numbers to enable the operator to readily plot the character about to be formed, thus eliminating the possibility of confusion, due to the many lines intersecting each other.
Another object of my invention is to provide a stencil sheet of this character which ma be used by the average person and wlnch is of comparatively simple construction.
With the preceding and other objects, as may become apparent from the disclosure, the invention consists in the sheet together with the combination of various guide lines or'slots so combined as to form any letter or number, and which will be hereinafter outlined and claimed.
The invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the stencil sheet;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of the same, illustrating a marking element engaged in one of the guide slots.
Referring in detail to the drawing, wherein like characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates a rectangular sheet which vmay be celluloid, aluminum or other light sti material.
In carrying out the invention, the sheet 5 is provided with a system of what shall be termed as guide lines, each of which is an interrupted-line of slots and perforations.
to line 14 and line 29 extends One set of these guide lines extends at spaced intervals in parallel relation across the sheet andare numbered from 6 to 10 inelusive.
A set of supplemental lines, indicated at 11, are arranged in parallelrelation to the first mentioned lines and are disposed at predetermined distances with respect to these lines. Intersecting the lines from 6 to 11 inclusive and disposed at right angles thereto 1s a plurality of lines numbered from 12 to 17 inclusive. I
A plurality of lines numbered from 18 to 22 extend diagonally from left to right across the sheet, and each of the lines 19 to 22 with one of the lines 6 and a line connectlng the same forms a triangle, while the line 18 with the left hand lower marginal edge of the sheet 5 forms a triangle. The l1ne 19 stops at a point at the intersection of lines 8 and 16, while line 20 extends to the point of intersection of the lines 10 and 17, the remaining lines extend entirely across the sheet.
A plurality of lines numbered from 23 to 32 inclusive extend diagonally across the sheet from right to left and with the right marginal edge or the parallel lines 6 to 10 form a triangle; the lines 23, 25, 26 and 28 are parallel, while lines 24, 27, 29, 31 and 32 are at a different relative pitch.
Line 24 stops at line14 and line 25 extends from the lower marginal edge of the sheet to line 15. Line 28 also extends from the lower marginal edge of the sheet from the upper marginal ed e of the sheet at line 9 and intersects ines 14 and extends to the lower marginal edge of the sheet. Line 30 extends from line 8 at line 14 to the lower marginal edge of the sheet and line-31 extends from line 8 at one end and stops at line 15 while line 32 intersects line 7 at line 14 and extends to the left marginal edge of the sheet.
Pairs of divergent lines 33 extend from points between lines 12 and 13 and 15 and 16 at the right marginal edge of the sheet and which touch on the line 10 at lines 14 and 17 and 16 and 12.
Pairs of divergent lines 34, whose degree of divergence is less than the lines 32, extend from points between lines 12 and 13 and '16 and 17 respectively; one line of each of the latter intersects one line of each pair of divergent lines 32 and stop at line 10, while the other line of each "pair touches the opposite mar inal edge ofthe sheet.
At the left of t 1e sheet, there are circular lines 35 Whose radius is within each other, and in the center of each of these circles is a smaller circle 36, one of these latter circles touches on lines 12 and 14 while the other touches on lines 15 and 17 being of a diameter equal the distance between each pair of these lines.
In order to indicate the starting point of various letters and numbers, of similar make-up, such as R,'B, P and D, groups of letters are inscribed on the sheet as illustrated in the drawin Another illustration would be H, K, E, and M. In making a letter or figure and in order to plot the same quickly, and in order to follow the correct lines, characters surround the outlines of the various letters, such as for example, the letter U is arranged at opposite sides of each parallel line of the outline of the U on the sheet.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape,
and protect by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s:
1. A combination stencil sheet having interrupted guide openingstherein arranged with respect to each other so that certain combinations of openings form certain char-- acters, and also havin groups of characters of similarity inscribe on the sheet to indicate the starting point of certain characters within a certain area of the sheet.
2. A combination stencil sheet having interrupted guide openings therein arranged with respect to each other so that certain combinations of openings form certain characters, and also havin groups of characters of similarity inscribe on the sheet to-indi-- cate the starting point of certain characters within a certain area of the sheet, the sheet being further provided with characters at points formin the outline of the various characterson t e stencil sheet.
SVERRE RIAN.
