DISPLAYING DEVICE FOR PRIMARY SCHOLARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,694, dated October 26,

To all whom it may concern.-
Be 'it known that I, JAMES DU SHANE, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Educational Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked part of this specification, in Which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved educational apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Figs. 3 and 4, details.
This invention relates to improvements in educational devices to be used in primary classes,
of the same, as will be hereinafter described, and particularlydesignated in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates the box on casingof the device, of the general form of a right angle, and coma, of a suitable width, and the side pieces, a a, all properly securerktogether. One of the side pieces may be hinged to the backa, so that it may be opened, for a purpose hereinafter explained, and is kept closed, when the box is in use, by any suitable retaining device.
B designates a strip or block,which is adapt- 1 ed to enter the case A and lie at an angle of about forty-five degrees against the back and bottom pieces, ca, as shown. This piece B is secured in place in the box by means of grooves I) I), made at the proper points in the back and bottom a a, into which it is slid by opening the hinged side a, which is closed after the piece B is in position, and thus effectually secures the same in place. If desired, the notches in the box may be dispensed with, also the hinged side, and the piece B secured within the box by means of an eye-piece, b, secured to its under surface, and a pin, b*, which passes through proper openings in the sides of the box and through the eye-piece when the block is in proper position, thereby securing the latter in place.
0-0 designate strips of suitable material I such as wood or pasteboard-which are of the the outer surface of principally; and it consists in the novel construction and argangement of parts same width as the piece B, and of aboutequal length with the back or bottom a. The inner or lowerends of these strips 0 are secured by hinges or other similar means to piece B. The strips are of equal length. Consequently, when secured upon piece B within the box, the upper end of each succeeding strip rises above the one preceding, as shown in Fig. 1. By this arrangement the strips may be successively turned up or down at will within the box. The outer free ends of the strips 0 are provided on their faces with numbers, designs, letters, or any suitable educational signs, as shown.
.The manner of using the device is as follows: One of the pieces B, with. attached strips 0, is secured within the box A. The teacher then turns the box so that the strips stand upright within the same. Consequently, only the figures upon the outer face of the first strip can be seen by the scholars. After the scholars have been questioned about the design upon the outer face of the first strip, the teacher turns it down, disclosing a new arrangement of figures or designs upon the succeeding strip, and so on until the lesson is ended.
To enable the teacher to know what is upon the strips facing the children, should he be holding the box in front of him,) the figures or design is printed upon the face of the strip adjoining that exposed, in small characters, so that when the first strip is lowered the teacher can tell by the small figures upon it what is exposed to the view of the scholars, and be enabled to correct mistakes, ($70.
By having the pieces B and attached strips removable from the box or case several differ-- ent sets of character-strips may be used in one case. After the first lesson with a set is finished that piece is removed and a new one inserted in the box by the described means. The strips being placed one above the other upon the inclined piece B, will always be in full view of the scholars, even when a number of preceding strips have been lowered upon the same piece B, and they can be. easily turned up or down by their overlapping.
By the described device the attention of the scholars to their lesson is retained, as each new strip may be made to represent new combinations, and thereby awaken their curiosity to know what will be next presented. The opposite sides of the strips in a set may contain different subjects, so that one set of strips will answer for two different lessons, after one is heard, the teacher merely having to turn the box to begin the new lesson without substituting a new set.
It is obvious that each set of strips can be permanently secured within its case; but as this would necessitate the having a case for each set,the before-described constructions are deemed preferable.
I am aware that advertising devices or exhibitors have been made in which the pictures are mounted in frames pivoted or hinged upon an inclined support secured in a portable case in such manner that the frames may be suecessively turned down to disclose the exhibits thereon. Such devices I do not claim; but,
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In an educational device, the combination, with a suitable case, and a piece, 13, removably secured therein at an angle, substantially as described, of the strips C, hinged at their lower ends upon the piece 13, each having on its faces large lesson-characters to be shown to the scholars, and small indicatingcharacters showing the design upon the next succeeding strip, so that when one strip is lowered the teacher can tell by the indicatingcharacter on the lowered strip what is exhibited to the scholars on the next succeeding one, all substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. In an educational device, the'combina tion, with a suitable case or box, and a removable piece, B, secured therein at an angle by means of an eyepiece, I), and pin b", as described, of a number of strips, (1, hinged at their inner ends upon the piece B, and bearing on their faces large figures or designs to be seen by the scholars, and small indicating figures or designs for the teacher, all substantially as specified.
