Definitions

  • This invention consists in the production of oil-cloth for tables and the like with marbleized surfaces, imitating in appearance the various fine marbles, with variegated colors, the said imita tion-marble surfaces being applied to the oilcloths which are made in the ordinary way previous to the application of the coating of varnish with which they are completed, according to the improved process invented by me and described in my patent dated March 14, 1871, which process consists chiefly in first providing the siu'face to be marbleized with any desired color for the ground color by means of a brush or otherwise; second, immersing the oil-cloth or other substance in a bath of water whereon another color-that which is to predominate, ground in oil and Damar varnish, mainly the latter-is floated and broken by rapidly stirring 5 and another veining color, mixed mainly with oil, is also floated and broken; and, lastly, removing the same and drying the coating so applied, after which a finishing coating of varnish may be applied to render the colors so applied clear and distinct.

Description

PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS CARSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MARBLEIZED OIL-CLOTHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,512, dated August 1, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS CARSON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Marbleized Oil-Cloth; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention consists in the production of oil-cloth for tables and the like with marbleized surfaces, imitating in appearance the various fine marbles, with variegated colors, the said imita tion-marble surfaces being applied to the oilcloths which are made in the ordinary way previous to the application of the coating of varnish with which they are completed, according to the improved process invented by me and described in my patent dated March 14, 1871, which process consists chiefly in first providing the siu'face to be marbleized with any desired color for the ground color by means of a brush or otherwise; second, immersing the oil-cloth or other substance in a bath of water whereon another color-that which is to predominate, ground in oil and Damar varnish, mainly the latter-is floated and broken by rapidly stirring 5 and another veining color, mixed mainly with oil, is also floated and broken; and, lastly, removing the same and drying the coating so applied, after which a finishing coating of varnish may be applied to render the colors so applied clear and distinct.
I propose to provide oil-cloths in this way with surfaces in imitation of marble of any kind.
' I can also marbleize leather in the same Way,
and thereby provide it with an ornamental surface desirable for many uses, and I propose to make such application of the improved marbleizin g process.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, oilcloths for tables, &c., having marbleized surfaces applied, substantially as specified.
Witnesses: THOMAS CARSON.
