Description

UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
ROBERT OUNNlNGHAM, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PROCESS OF ORNAMENTING SMOOTH SURFACES 0F GLASS, WOOD, RUBBER, &c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,802, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed January 20, 1880. v
.To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT CUNNINGHAM, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Process for Ornamenting Smooth Surfaces, of which the following is a specification. i
The object of this invention is to produce the effects of inlaid work on smooth and level surfaces, such as hard rubber, gelatine, wood, glass, metals, ivory, earthenware, stone, celluloid, or any other article or composition having ahard, smooth, or level surface.
The process consists in fixing upon the surface of the article to be ornamented with some adhesive substance, preferably-transparent, the material or objects with which the said surface is to be ornamented, and when the adhesive substance is dry, then to pour over the entire surface to be ornamented and the ornaments a sufiicient quantity of transparent alcohol copal varnish to entirely cover and embed the ornaments fixed upon the ob ject; and it further consists in placing the ornamented object in a perfectly level position and allowing it to remain until the surface becomes-hard and dry.
If, however, a still harder surface isdesired, 1 coat the entire surface of the ornamented article with collodion, poured over the copalvarnish covering.
By this process pieces of pearl and bits of metallic foil, pictures,'and other articles, ar-
ranged in any suitable designs, can be fixed upon any hard smooth surfaces, so as to produce the beautiful effects of papier-mach or inlaid work, forming a perfectly glossy surface and showing all the beauty of the ornamentin g material, as well as giving the ornamented object a fine rounded edge.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The within -described process of ornamentation, which consists in fixing the ornament in the desired position with some suitable adhesive substance or fastening, and then pouring over the entire surface of the ornament and its support a sufficient quantity of transparent alcohol copal varnish to entirely cover and embed the ornament, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The within described process of ornamentation, which consists in fixing the ornament in the desired position with some suitable adhesive substance or fastening, and then pouring over the entire surface of the ornament and its support a sufficient quantity of transparent alcohol copal varnish to entirely cover and embed the ornament, and then covering the entire surface over the copal varnish with collodion, as herein set forth.
ROBERT CUNNINGHAM.
