PATENT OFFICE.
EUSTACE CREES AND CHARLES S. COURT, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNORS TO THE WATSON AND NEWELL COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS OR SIMILAR ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 36,304, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed March 26,1903. Serial No. 149,761. Term of patent '7 years.
To aJZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that We, EUSTAOE CREES and CHARLES S. COURT, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Providence, in
the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new, original, and ornamental Design for the Handle of a Spoon or Similar Article, of which the following is a specification, reference being to had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a view of the obverse side of a spoon-handle, showing our new design; and Fig. 2 the reverse side of the same.
The leading feature of our design consists in the ornamental arrangement of Easter lilies and leaves represented in relief.
On the obverse side, Fig. 1, A designates the upper section or head, B the adjacent middle section, and C the lower section or shank of the handle. At the base of section C lies a lily-blossom 3, flanked by the scrolls 4. From behind the lily 3 springs a mass of leaves and stems which intertwine in an upward direction to the top of the handle, where they meet to form the pointed apex 5. In section 13 they inclose a plain surface 6, on one side of which is a bud 7 and below which is a lily 8. Overlying these leaves and stems and springing from their midst in section C are the buds 9, while in section A is a large cluster of lilies partially overlapping each other, which forms the principal decoration of the head-surface.
On the reverse side, Fig. 2, the design consists of a border, elongated lily-leaves branching out into Various curves and wavy terminations and converging at the top of the handle into a pointed apex above the lily-blossom 13, which surmounts the stem 14. Opposite the stem l tlies a bud 15. Immediately below the lily 13 is a central plain surface 16, beneath which is the lily 17, partially concealed by the leaf 18. Below the lily 7 is a bud 19 and on either side of the base ex- 5 tremity a scroll 10.
It is evident that our design is applicable to the handles of articles other than but simi lar to spoons.
Having described our invention, our claim 1s- The ornamental design for the handle of a spoon or similar article, as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
EUSTACE CREES. CHARLES S. COURT.
