UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM C. WILLIAMS,
DESIGN FOR or RAVENNA, OHIO.
A SAD -IRON;
To rtZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM G. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ravenna, Portage county, and State of Ohio, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Sad-Irons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
Referring to the drawings,-Figure I is a perspective view of my design. Fig. II is a top plan. Fig. III is a central longitudinal section on lines III III, Fig. II.
The leading feature of my design consists of the new and original shape and configuration of the sad-iron as shown in the drawings.
In the drawings, A designates the sad-iron, which is approximately wedge-shaped in plan being pointed at its front end and flat at its rear end.
a and ct represent the respective sides and The sides a and a respectively swell outwardly from the front point to the rear end in agraceful curve. The rear end a? is an isosceles trapezoid in shape, its edges are well defined, and the surface is flat and smooth.
On the upper surface of the iron and at each side thereof are formed two ridges b and b. Each ridge is highest at the central point of its inner edge, from which point the surface of the ridge curves and slopes toward the :front of the iron, toward the side, and toward the rear end. At their outer edges these ridges are level with and follow the contour of the respective sides. The inner edges or sides of the ridges are straight, except at the center, where they are oppositively concaved.
The ridges are pointed at their front ends and increase in width as they approach the rearend of the iron and merge into the upper edge thereof. The surfaces of the ridges are ornamented with a scrollwork design. The distinctive and peculiar curvature of the surfaces of these ridges not only gives a pleasing effect to the iron, but also facilitates the adjustment of handle thereon, as no matter at what angle the handle strikes the rear of the iron the peculiar slope of the ridges at their rear ends tends to deflect it toward the center of the iron.
The upper surface of the iron between the ridges Z9 and b is slightly countersunk, and in the center of this countersunk portion are formed two circular cavities c and c, which merge into each other, presenting a fanciful resemblance to the figure 8. A bar 0 bridges the cavities where they merge together.
The essential features of mydesign are the substantially wed ge-shaped body, the smooth fiat rear end, which is an isosceles trapezoid in form, the curved ridges formed integral with the body of the iron, and the cavity formed in the upper surface of said body and bridged by the bar 0 Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for a sad-iron, as herein shown and described.
Signed by me at Cleveland, Ohio, this 23d day of March, 1900.
ADAM O. WILLIAMS.
