Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE .':aPECIFICATION forming part ol' Design No. 16,948, dated October 25, 1886,
Application filed May 5, 1886. Serial No. 201,245. Term of patent 14 years. i
l'o all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BERGER,
. a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and original Design for Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective of my saucepanhandle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view ofthe same, taken on line X X. Fig. 3 is abottom plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of Fig. l on the line X X. Figs. 5 and 6 are modilications. Fig. 7 is a view showing the flanges with their corrugations on the bottom portion of the handle. Fig. 8 is a top plan view thereof, and Fig. 9 is a view showing the flanges ofthe handle provided with serrations. 9
The main feature of my design consists in a series of corrugations or serrations extending along the top or bottom portion of the handle. Each side of this is a central main portion, and at the outer portion of the handle I have formed an opening, c2, which serves to relieve the outer portion of the handle of that heavy appearance which it would have if the middle portion were left solid.
Another new feature of my design is a series of perforations, a', which series extends along the neck of the handle between the opening and the ear B.
The handle is formed in three distinct sections-that is, the bottom portion, which is designated by the letter e, and the second iange by letter d,which extends to each side ofthe portion e. These flanges are straight-sided, and have corrugations or serrations on the top or bottom portion thereof. These straight-sided iianges give the handle a clear-cut, smooth appea-rance.
It will of course be understood that a handle might be made very similar to my handle curved instead of straight, as is shownin the modification in Fig. 5, without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the straight-sided anges. It is also quite apparent that the perforations a may be replaced by a series of oval or triangular openings, as shown in the modification in Fig. 6.
The ear B is provided with ornamental curves or circles c5, with a projection, a, each side of its widest part.
Vhat I deem most important, and what, therefore, I consider the most valuable feature of theinvention, and what I wish to seemeby Letters Patent, is-
l. In a design for handles, the handle proI vided with serrations and perforations, as de scribed and shown, and the ear B, having curved portions a5 ci, substantially as shown.
2. In a design for handles, the handle the central portion oi' which is providedwith perforations and an elongated opening, and the iianges located. atthe sides of the central por' tion of' the handle, and having serrations or corrugations, as set forth.
3. In a design for handles, the handle having its body portion provided with perforations and an opening, and the sides of said body portion having iianges provided with serrations or corrugations, as shown and described, and the ear end of said handle having curved portions, as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I ailix my. signature, in
presence of two witnesses, this 30th day of April, A. D. 1886.
