fi z'messes UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM S. IN GLIS, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
DESIGN FOR A STAlR-TREAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Design N0. 28,351, dated March 8, 1898.
Application filed January 22, 1898. Serial No. 667,667. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. News, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and original Design for Stair-'lreads; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and said drawings constitute part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stairtread, and Fig. 2 an edge view of the same.
My invention relates to a design for a tread adapted to be used on the tread of a flight of stairs; and it consists in the configuration of the structure, as hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The tread a is oblong in shape, of substantially uniform thickness along the rear edge I), the front edge 0, and for the greater part along the sides. Near the front edge 0, however, there is a lengthwise rib or rounded projection d from the upper surface of the tread, into the outline of which the adjacent surface of the tread merges into a gradual curve. This feature of the configuration of the tread is clearly shown in the edge viewin Fig. 2, and it forms a marked characteristic of the design, being apparent Whenever the tread is viewed from the upper side or from the edge. The greater portion of the surface of the tread maybe provided with a surface ornamentation made upof straight or curved lines; but such surface ornamentation forms no part of the design.
The essential feature of my invention is the pronounced projection from the surface of the tread near the front edge, as described.
I clai1n- The design for a stair-tread substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM S. INGLIS.
