Description

OP D 25.862
DESIGN.
J. L. SUMMER. BUTTON HOOK, 8m. No. 28,862. Patented Dec. 11,1894.
UNITED STATES JOHN L.
PATENT OFFICE.
SOMMER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR A BUTTON-HOOK, 86C- SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 23,862, dated December 11, 1894.
Application filed October 1894. Serial No. 526,225. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. SOMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and original Design for the Handles of Button-Hooks and Similar Articles, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This design relates to the ornamentation of the handles of button hooks and other toilet articles, and consists in the embossed ornamental patterns aoross both ends of the handle combined with a smooth unornamented intervening space, such portions of the entire surface forming three contrasting panels of substantially equal extent.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a button hook embodying my design, and Fig. 2 an edge view of the same.
It will be observed that each face of the handle is divided transversely into three pertions constituting the ornamental panels a b c of substantially equal length. The middle panel b presents a smooth flat surface of oval shape wholly undecorated, while the adjacent panels a and c are each provided with an ornamental pattern formed of fancy scrolls and other objects in marked contrast with the adjacent panel. The pattern of the panel a comprises a substantially U -shaped scroll at the lower end with another scroll of conventional form above the same; and the pattern of the panel 0 consists of a representation of a full blown rose near the center surmounted by two similar scrolls of conventional form and with a pair of similar scrolls below the same together forming an oval figure inelosinga series of lines converging toward the upper end.
The leading feature of the design consists in the three panels of which the central one is plain and unornamented, and the adjacent panels are ornamented with the patterns above described.
While it is my custom to apply suitable lettering to the blank space afforded by the central panel, the same is not illustrated herein, as it forms no part of the present design.
Having thus set forth the nature of the design, what I claim herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for the handles of button hooks and similar articles herein shown and described.
In testimony my hand in the whereof I have hereunto set presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN L. SOMMER. Witnesses:
MAXIMILIAN G. HANGS,
HENRY J. MILLER.
