Description

DESIGN FOR A DISH.
Patented Dec. 9, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE STEEL, OF BROOKLYN, NE\V YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY MADDOCK, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A DlSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 20,374, dated December 9, 1890.
Application filed March 24, 1890. Serial 110.3%,164. Term of patent '7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE STEEL, a citi- 7.011 0E the United States, residing in llrooklyu, in the county oi. Kings and State of New York, have invented and produced a newand original Design for Covered Dishes, of which the following is a specification.
The present design consists in the shape and surface ornamentation of the body and cover of dishes and of the handles for the body and cover.
The design is applicable to various dishes constituting what is known asa dinner-set or other set of dishes, as well 'as a soup-tureen, vegetable-dish, sugar-bowl, rise.
The accompanying photograph shows the design applied to a low dish of the character of a soup-tureen or vegetable-dish.
Figure 1 is a perspective view lookingfrom above. Fig. 2 is a similar view from another position, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view looking from beneath.
The body A of the dish is formed with oblique sides and ends, which are made slightly curved, the portion a, which is above the foot I), being slightly convex, and the portion 0 above being slightly concave and terminating in an upper rim d, which is directed upwardly. The outline of the body is diversified by slight corrugations extending from the foot upwardly to the rim. At the corners, which are rounded, several of these corrugations are grouped, as clearly shown at c e, forming a fluted corner, the flutes radiating slightly as they ascend. In the middle of each end of the dish is a linef, formed as a slightsalient rib. Between this rib and the corner eorrugationsc the side and end surfaces of the dish are formed in horizontal planes with very slight reverse curves, the sides being slightly concave on each side of the ribsfand slightly convex adjacent to the nearest corrugation e. The rim (1 is correspomlingly varied in outline, being indented at the junctions of the corrugations e c, as shown at i i, and being slightly salient atthc junction of the ribj', as shown atj. The foot I; is correspondingly varied, having indentations i at the corners and being slightly recessed or indented at j at the base oi the rib f.
On each end oi" the dish is a handle 1 having the shape of a curved bar, terminating at one end in a leaf 7;, which lies fiat against the exterior of the end of the dish. The bar curves in a graceful loop over the rim of the end of the dish, and its other end terminates in almob l, which lies on the upper and inner side of the dish. The loop of the leaf is pro longed over the lower side of the bar, and the upper side thereof is formed with serrated or small leaf-like protuberances m.
The cover C is formed with a flat central portion or panel 71, the outline of which is generally quadrilateral, varied, however, by being rounded at the corpers and eoncaved on each side and end between the corners and the middle, the concave outlines joining at the middle to form a slightly-salient angle. The outer portions of the cover descend in graceful reverse curves to the lower edge or rim thereof, the shape being in general similar to the shape of the sides of the dish. The surface of the cover descends with a slight concave c'adjacent to the fiat center, merging into the convex or dome-shaped portion 0., below which the latter extends to and terminates at the rim of the cover. The corners are rounded and diversified by radial flutes or corrugations e e, extending from the corners of the center n to the rim. Down the middle of each side and end extends a slightly salient rib f. The surface of the cover be tween this rib and the corner corrugations is formed slightly concaved adjacent to the rib on each side thereof and slightly convex adjacent to the corner corrugations.
The covcnhandle I) has the general form of an arch or loop, the ends of which rcston the [lat center I: of the cover. These ends have in general the funnel lea\es,the arched portion of the handle consisting of the stems of these leaves 1.". each of which terminates in a slight scroll-like knob l, the two knobs be ing arranged on opposite sides of the loop of the handle, near the middle thereof, giving the handle the appearance clearly shown in Fig. l.
The handles I3 and l)constitutescgl'ogablc parts of my dcsigxnwhieh maybe used on other dishes and covers. My design is not necessarily restricted to a coverrddish, since the cover may be removed or omitted, len\'- ing the remaining portion of the design for the body of the dish.
I have not deemed itneeessary to illustrate all the ditTerent dishes of a set of dishes to which my design is applicable, the modification of a design in mere matters of proportion to adapt it from an elongated tea square dish or from a low to a high dish being well understood in the art.
What I claim is l. The design for the shape and surface ornamentatienofa covered dish, substantially as shown in the accompanying photograph.
J. The design for the body of a dish ,eonsistiug 0f the shape and surface ornament? lien thereuf, substantially as shown and described.
l l l ii. The design for the cover of a dish, consisting of the shape and surface 0rnamentatien thereof, substantially as shown and de scribed.
4. In a design fora dish, the end handles 1) ll thereof, substantially as shown and described.
In a design [inthe curerot a dish, the handle 1) thereof, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORG 1 STEEL.
