DESIGN FOR THE ORNAMENTATION OF BUILDERS HARDWARE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 19,545, dated December 31, 1889.

Be it known that I, GEORGE S. BARKENTIN, acitizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented and produced anew and original Design for the Ornamentation of Builders Hardware, of which the following 1s a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.

Figure l is a face view of a knob and escutcheon-plate having my design of surface ornament-ation thereon, and Fig. 2 is a like View of a push-button and escutcheou-plate on which is placed my design for surface ornamentation.

The invention relates to surface ornamentat-ion of builders hardware, including the knob, the key-hole and knob escutcheous, the faceplate or front of the latch, sash-lifts, hinges, and other articles.

The leading feature of my design consists in the surface ornamentation of the panels or other faces on articles of builders hardware by figures consisting of intermingled conventional leaves, scrolls, and faces.

In both figures, a designates figures representing human faces, and b the leaf and scroll figures,the same interminglingwith each other and a part of them extending from the faces, as shown. The principal panels or faces-as, for instance, the knob-front A and the major panel in the escutcheon-plate B--are each surrounded by rows of beads d. Surrounding this bead-border on each escutcheon-plate is a plain border e, and outside of this is a border f, composed of alternate scrolls and beads. Each escutcheon-plate is provided with a crown or cap C and a base D, the design of which is in harmony with that already described. Each of the faces is combined with the scrolls and leaves, so as to representwhat might be termed conventional crowns and beard, as shown.

2. In the design for surface ornamentation of builders hardware herein shown and described, the surface ornamentation of the panel-ground, comprising the figures of human faces and interniingling leaf and scroll figures, forming conventional crowns and beard, as set forth.

3. In the design for the surface ornamentation of builders hardware herein shown and described, the surface ornamentation of the panels, comprising the intermingling leaf and scroll figures and a surrounding border of beads d, as set forth.
