DESIGN FOR THE ORNAMENTATION OF BUILDERS HARDWARE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,344, dated May 17, 1887.

Application filed March 18, 1887. Serial No. 231,437. Term of patent 14 years.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RonoLrHn W. E. Crims- TESEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Ornamental Faces on Articles of Builders Hardware, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.

The drawing shows a front elevation of my newly-designed ornamental face as applied to a latch and lock escutcheon-plate.

The invention relates to the ornamentation of builders hardware, including the knob, the key-hole, and knob-escutcheons, the face-plate or front of the latch, the hinges, and other articles.

The leading feature of my design consists of the ornamentation of the ground-work or prominent faces on articles of builders hard- .ware-as, for instance, a panel-border or panel-by a series of transverse elevations or ribs partially covering the ground and having the appearance of woven-wire netting on a solid ground.

I have herein illustrated my design as applied to the surfaces of a.wide panel-border, as at A, while the panel B is plain. At each corner of the plate, however, I have shown substantial square-corner blocks a, with a quarterfoil on each. The ornament on the border-surfaces A is formed of rounded ribs or wire-like elevations b 0, extending obliquely over the surface in two series of right parallel lines arranged transversely to each other and intersecting, giving the appearance of being in terwoven. These elevations are some distance from each other, so as to show portions of the solid ground between the apparent meshes, 0 which ground is striated.

I am aware that a prior patent shows a design for a hinge in which the sunken surface of the panel-border is ornamented in representation of a flattened braid, while a portion 5 inclosed by said braid was in the representation of basket-work with broad flat splints. Another patent shows a design for a fire-place in which the panels are ornamented in rcpresentation of open basket-work having narrow 5o flattened splints. All of said prior art is hereby disclaimed.

I claim- 1. The design for the ornamental faces on articles of builders hardware herein shown and 5 described, the same consisting of the two series of rounded wire-like elevations extending obliquely over the surface, crossing each"other, and having the appearance of woven wire netting on a solid ground.
