Description

' G. P. OUDIN.
BEVELED GLASS.
No. 358,784. Patented Mar. 1, 1887..
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. OUDIN, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
BEVELED GLASS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,784, dated March 1, 1887. Application filed December 22, 1886. Serial No. 222,303. (Ndmodehl .To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. OUDIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Beveled Glass, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of a plate or panel of beveled glass formed with a shoulder or offset between'the plain surface or face of the glass and its beveled edge, whereby the face of the glass is made to stand out from the bevel in clearly-defined lines, giving the glass a rich appearance and enabling it to be more advantageously set, and avoiding double and conflicting reflections at the edges of the glass.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of a square or rectangular plate of glass beveled in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
A represents the face of the glass formed with the beveled surrounding edge B. Be-
tween the face A and bevel B is formed the bead or offset 0, which clearly defines the face and separates it from the bevel, giving the face a distinct outline, thus producing in efi'ect a combined flat and beveled glass. The offset 0 in this instance joins the bevel B at an obtuse angle, so that there is no reflection from the bevel into the face of the glass; but any rays of light passing through the offset and striking the bevel are refracted, giving the prismatic colors, so that the effect is very striking, especially in large plates used for decorative purposes.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new and improved article of manufacture, a plate of beveled glass formed with an offset between the bevel and the face of the glass, substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES P. OUDIN.
