INVENTDF! MM, M. mw
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY \V. BEESTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DESIGN FOR AN UMBRELLA-STAND.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Design No. 19,452, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed September 26,1889. Serial No. 325,179- Term of patent 3% years.
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY W. BEESTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented and produced a new and original Design for Umbrella-Stands, of which the following is aspeeification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
My invention has relation to umbrellastands or receptacles for holding umbrellas, canes, or the like, and has for its object the production of a new and original design for such articles which will present a highly ornamental and attractive appearance.
My invention consists in an umbrella-stand of cylindrical shape with a suitable base or bottom and a top, the main portion or body of such stands between said top and bottom having a centrally-located square of large area, with its points nearest the sides and ends of said body, said square having therein a number of parallel and equidistant ridges or ribs, and a number of similar ribs or ridges extending in another direction and across or intersecting the first-m entioned ribs or ridges, the spaces between said ridges being depressed slightly or concaved. The result of this criss-crossing of the ribs is the production of a number of small concaved squares within the boundaries of the large square. Radiating from the upper and lower points of the large square to the edge of the body of the stand are a'number of ribs or ridges with the spaces between them slightly depressed or concaved. The ridges which extend toward the axial line of the body or nearest said line form the outer edges or boundaries of the large square above mentioned and their points of juncture form the side points of said square.
In the drawings, G represents the main portion or body of the umbrella-stand, provided with the flaringtop or dome II and the flaring base or bottom I, with the round moldings i, said top and base being secured to said body at h and i, respectively.
g g represent the ridges radiating from the upper point h of the large square K, and g g represent the ridges extending or radiating from the lower point k of said square, the junctions of the inmost ridges g g of the different sets forming the side points 10 of the square K. g represents the depressions between the ribs g g. As will be observed, the fact of the side points not extending all the way to the sides of the body G necessitates the shortening of several of the inmost ribs of the lower set, as shown at g in order to avoid the crossing of the ribs of the upper set, although it may he sometimes desirable to have said shortened ribs cross and extend clear to the sides.
Within the boundariesof the square K are a number of ribs or ridges k parallel with said boundaries and crossing each other in cries-cross fashion, formingsquare or diamond-shaped spaces It between said ridges, which spaces are slightly depressed or concaved.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for umbrella-stands, consisting of the cylindrical body portion G, provided with a base and top and having the radial ribs g g g 9 extending from the pointsk 7c, the intermediate depressions g, the square K, the ribs is within said square, and the intermediate depressions 1c", substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of September, A. D. 1889.
HENRY BEESTON.
