FABMC PUR GLUAKMG. m.
PatentedApr. 3U, 1889,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY TOPlIAM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR ,I() SCHEP- 'PERS BROTHERS, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR FABRIC FOR CLOAKING, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 19,073, dated April 30, 1889. Application filed March 27, 1889. Serial No. 305,003. Term of'patent 3% years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY TOPHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadel- `phia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new and original Design forFabrie for Cloaking, the., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying photograph, formvo ing part hereof, in which is illustrated in front elevation the design for fabric for cloaking, dsc., embodying the characteristic features of my invention.
The leading features of my design consist,
broadly, of irregular or fanciful eonflgurations disposed in wide broken stripes having waving and curvilinear contours, which are alternated with narrow stripes of differentlydisposed fanciful configurations having wavzo ing or zigzag contours, and both of the said stripes running the entire length of the goods, as hereinafter more particularly described.
Referring' to the aecompanyin g photograph, forming part hereof, A represents the wide broken stripes, composed of either solid or broken bars or blocks B, indiscriininately disposed and forming different configurations.
)ach of the blocks or bars ll is composed of slanting or parallel full or dotted lines in 3o white or other preferred color. The broken dotted bars C and the full-line bar Il lie parallel, or substantially so, to each other and the ends of the goods, thereby presenting to the eye a wide broken stripe running the entire 3 5 length thereof in eurvilinearor waving outlines and forming several irregular and fanciful configurations.
The different configurations embodying the features of luy invention are repeated alter- 4o nately through the broad or wide stripe, while those between the alternate configurations are disposed in an inverse manner.
Starting now from the top of the configuration or design, it consists, first, of a fanciful letter y, designated in the photograph by the letter f, and beneath which, in contact with its first stroke, is a transversely-disposcd fanciful shaped figure 2, which is designated by the letter (j, and whose base is par- 5o allel with the left-hand edge of the goods. rlhe base is somewhat broadened toward the termination thereof. Beneath the fanciful figure 2, and in Contact with the upper curved portion thereof, is a conventional three-leaf clover or three-pointed star (designated by h) within the field of the stripe and opposite the broadened base of the figure 2. To the left of the said conventional three-leaf clover or three-pointed star 71y is a crescent or new moon, 6o
The configurations just described constituting the design are then repeated inversely, so that the base of the figure 2 is parallel, or substantially so, with the rightfhand edge of the goods, while the other fanciful figures or conventional characters assume their relative positions to the figure 2.
K represents the narrow stripe, consisting of slanting or parallel rows of fine dotted or full lines, forming blocks or bars l, which bars 7o or blocks are substantially parallel with the sides of the goods. The bars or blocks l are of' different lengths, some of which are broken, and the whole thereby presenting to the eye a narrow stripe of curv ilinear contour run ning the entire length of the goods parallel with the wide stripe hereinbefore described.
Starting now from the top of one of the configurations of the narrow stripe, it consists, first, of an inverted interrogationemark 8o designated by `m, and having a bar, 91, across the end thereof. :lencath this interrogation-point 29, and in contact with the lower portion thereof, is a letter s, designated by the letter o, and 4beneath the saine, 85 and in contact with the lower curve of the s," is an inverted leiter g, designated by p.
The above-mentioned configurations constituting the design of the narrow stripe are repeated throughout the lengthof the stripes. 9o
Having thus described the nature and obljects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for fabric for oloaking, tice., as herein described, and shown in the acemnpanying illustration.
In witness'whereofl have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY TOPIIAM. \\'iinessos:
GEO. W. REED, '.IIIoMAs M. SMITH.
