CHARLES WILLIS WARD, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
DESIGN FOR A WATCH-BRIDGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No, 18,722, dated November 6. 1888.
Applicutiun liledSeptember 10, I883. Serial No. 265,079. Term ofpnienti 7 years.
To all whom it may concern;
Beit known that I. CHARLES WILLIs \VARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of \Vestchestcr and State of New York, have invented and produced a. new and original. Design: for a Watch- Bridge; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to a new and original design for upper plates or bridge for watches; and it consists in the peculiar formation and ornamental shaping hereinafter described and claimed.
As shown in the accompanying engraving, the outer casing, A, is represented as encircling the works of a watch, the respective bridges abutting against the same and extending inward toward the center. That portion of the bridge or plate'dcsiguated by B,an.d commonly known as the barrel-bridge, is semicircular in form, it extending midway thclcngth of the watch, its outer edge conforming to the inner contour of the casing. The upper edge of this portion 15 is formed in a series ofgrac'cl'ul curves, which extend from opposite sides or corners, bending uniformly downward at increasing inclines to points midway the center and the sides. At this point the edges are curved abruptly upward and unite to form a dome or circular projection, as U,which projects over the center of the watch above the plane of the sides. That portion of the plate commonly known as the trainbridge. designated by D and located above and at the right of the portion B, hasitslowcredgecurved in a manner diametrically opposite thatof the adjacent portion of the lower bridge. The
end of portion D is extended in toward the center and terminates in a rounded or circular point occupying a position between the projection C and the upper curved edge of portion B. The upper or side edge of this portion D is curved inwardly, as shown, there being a circular projection, as A, about midway its length,which breaks its continuity. By forn ing the lower edge as described and placing the portion D as shown a space is formed between the two bridges which has parallelsides extending from a point near the center to the outer edge of the watch, thus adding to the beauty of the design. The portion E extends downward from the top oitheeasing, its lower end coming in proximity to the projection d on portion D, its side adjacent to said portion being curved inwardly to form a substantially oblong space between the two. The opposite side of portion 15 is formed into a graceful curved extension, as shown. The end of the bridge has a k nob, in which is placed the bearing for the cscapeinent.
1* represents the balanceeock, which is of the usual form and extends into the space between the upper and lower portions.
By this design an artistic plate is formed and the ornamental uuderplate, the balance, and a large portion of the train are visible.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design fora watch-bridge, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aillx mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES WILLIS WARD.
