UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CANDACE WIUCELEIL OF JAMAICA, NEW YORK.
DESIGN FOR HANGINGS, COVERINGS, &.C.
SPECIFICATION forming pan; of Design No. 16.469, dated January 12, 1886.
A pplication tiled Jun(| lll. 1R85. Sei-iai No. 169,983. Term nl' patent 3| yearn.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GANDACE WHEELER, of Jamaica, Queens county, Long Island, New York, have invented a new and original Design for Hangings, Upholstery, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference bcing had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to a nen and original design to be worked into or upon fabrics, paper,&c., for use inhangings, upliolstery, wall coverings, die.; and it consists of the novel grouping and configuration of figures herein fuliy described and shown.
The drawing illustrates a face view ofa fabric having my new design.
The design consistsin aoertain combination of leaves and stem-work with the fruit of the pomegranat-e. One figure, a, contains a number oi leaves radiating from a point at about the middle ofthe base oftheigure: From this same point two stems, one on either side, pass around the figure, inclosing the leaves, and, coming within a short distance of each other at the top, curve n p ward,so as to become about parallel, then curve outward again, and con tinue to curve in the same direction until a From this end ofthe stem spring smaller stems, supporting pomegranates, three hanging within the small circle, and one without. The general appearance of this ligure, omitting the fruit, is like that of a. vase with a brcazl flat body, a narrow neck, and with the Bange of the vase at the top greatly widened and curved down and in upon the body. These figures are continuous, one vase-shaped figure above another, in such way that the two stems form ing the base of one gure rest upon the two stems forming the mouth of the figure below. 0n either side of this row of figures is another row of figures, b, similar to the first in general form andI character, but differing from it in the following particulars: The same vase form with the pendent pomegranates at the top is retained; but the vase is narrower, the radiating point of the leaves is raised to within a short distance of the center ofthe body, the number of leaves is increased, some hanging downward, the top of the body tapers more gradually into the neck, the neck is narrower and higher, and, lastly, the stems forming the outlines ot the vase-forms are now continuous, the two stems forming the mouth of one vascform no longer curving around to form a cir cle, but running into the two stems, respectively, th'at form the base of thc vase-shaped ligure above, and the stems that support the pomegranates being oiishoots springing from the sides ofthe neck and curving downward, with the convexity toward the body of the vase-shaped figure, and then upward, giving o' stems that support the fruit-three within the small circle and one without, as belope. These two distinct rows ot figures alternate with each other across the width of the design, and are so placed that theneck of a vasesliaped figure in one row is on alevcl with the body ol' a vase shaped ligure in the next row. The characteristic feature of my design is the vase-shaped figure made of leaves and stemwork, and having pendent pomegranates in groups of four, three within and one without the circle.
What I claim as new, and desire t-o secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for goods for hangings, upholstery, walllcoverings, 85e., said design consisting of a. representation of leaves, stem-work, and the fruit of the pomegranate, combined and arranged substantially as shown and described.
