Description

DESIGN FOR AN ORGAN-CASE.
Design No. 12,454, dated September 13, 1881 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN I. CARPENTER, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR AN ORGAN-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,454, dated September 18, 1881.
Application filed July 30, 1881. Term ofpat-ent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN P. CARPENTER, of \Vorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and original Design t'orOrgan-Gases; and I declare the following to be a description of my said design sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to. the accompanying photographs, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 shows aperspective front and end view of my new design for organ-cases; and Figs. 2 and 3 show perspective views of the back of the case, the latter with the swinging panel open.
In the lower front of the case there is a large central panel,a,above the pedals and extending about three-fifths of the width of front, ornameuted wit-l1 a raised pointed fret having incised line ornaments on its face. Said panel is flanked by small plain panels 0 at right and left, bein g separated therefrom by ornamental pilasters springingt'rom brackets on the face of the base-piece c, as shown. Above these panels projects the key-breast, the front piece, d, of which has a perforated serpentine and leaf ornament. At the right and left of the front are the end buttresses and brackets, e e, formed and decorated in the style illustrated, their top ends receding above the breast with a double curve terminating at or nearly over the angle line of the case with ornamental stands f, for vases or lamps.
The ends of the case are finished with short lower panels, g, containing a carved central ornament and flanked by small molded huttresses, above which is arranged a plain incised or stenciled panel, h, surrounded by a plain frame or border. A roll head or ledge separates the upper and lower end panels. The breast-bracket, where it stands forward ofthe panel-frame,has a standing leaf ornament, the tips of the three leaves terminating in buttons or rosettes, as indicated.
Upon the top of the case is a. raised form composed of inclined ornamented pieces i, for supporting music-books. The inner ends of said pieces a are supported at some distance apart by rows of small columns 5, surmounted by a miniature entablature and balustrade, while the outer ends rest upon the top of the case ends and have ornamental guards or brackets, against which the books and music rest and are retained upon the shelves. The musicrack inclines hack to rest against the end of the entahlatnre of the columnar supports 2'', as illustrated.
The back of the case is finished with two large central panels, j k, above the base-board and moldings, the lower of said panels being ornamented, similar to the central front panel, a, with pointed ornaments, and the upper one made plain and decorated with a stenciled or gilded ornament. At the sides of these larger panels are smaller panels, 1 m, the upper ones bearin g carved ornaments and the lower ones plain. These several panels are separated from each other and the base by molded pilasters and transonis, as illustrated.
The large lower panels, a and k, may be hinged to open downward, or be made in two parts, to swing like doors.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The design for the top of an organ'case, consisting of the inclined shelves i, having their outer ends supported on the ends of the organ-case and their inner ends supported by the rows of columns '6, with entablature and balnstrades, as shown.
2. The design for the front of an organ-case, consisting of the panels a b,pilasters, and buttresses, arranged and ornamented as shown.
3. The design for the back of an organ-case, consisting of the panelsj k lm, with pilasters, base and transoms, arranged and ornamented as shown.
4. The design for the end of an organ-case, consisting of the lower and upper panels, 9 h, the breast-bracket e, and stands f, formed and ornamented as shown.
5. The organ-case built in the form shown, with the inclined open-centered topfinish, and having its front, back, and ends finished and decorated with ornamental panels and devices, arranged in the manner herein shown and described.
Witness my hand this 20th day of July, A.
EDWIN P. CARPENTER. Witnesses:
