S. W. BELK. Handle for Spoons, Forks, &o.
No. 12,24i. Patented May 3,1881.
WWII/03505 Inuenlfir tbmfl/Laoom 77/ M b (Q6. mcwaow UNITED STATES PATENT DESIGN FOR HANDLE FOR SPOONS, FORKS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,241, dated May 3, 1881.
Application filed March 15, 1881. Term of patent? years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. BELK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wallingford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Handle ot' Spoons, Forks, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companyin g drawing, forming part thereof, in
which is represented a front view of a fork having my newly-designed handle.
The invention relates to a design for the handle of spoons, forks, and like articles of tableservice; and it consists in the peculiar config I 5 uration of the inelosure formed by the fillet on each side of the upper part of the handle, and in a panel at the tip, in connection with the representation of a series of crowns under said panel.
It consists, also, in the representation upon the handle, above the central boss thereof, of a spherical flower pot or vase containing a standing plant.
Heretot'ore the upper part of spoon and fork handles has been made gradually expanding in two curved lines, and a curved fillet gradually tapering toward the central portion has been used upon them. Other handles have been made with straight sides and fillets par- 0 allel with said sides.
The representation of a standing plant has also been used as an ornament upon the handle but my design differs in many respects from all made previously) To describe the invention more fully, starting from the body of the article, the handle is prov ded nearly half-way of its length with a boss, a, having three ornament-s, each'oiie' showing four leaves, and under said boss is 40 shown a half-open fan, 1). Above the boss at the handle gradually expands in two straight lines, 0 c, terminating in two concave curves, d, in the form of a quarter of a circle, united by two straight lines, 0, converging together in the center of the tip. Between the sides 0 are placed straight fillet-lines f, starting from the outer end of lines a, and extending nearly down to the boss a, converging there with the sides 0; and between the edges 0 and fillets f are embossed a series of ornamental figures, gradually diminishing in size toward said boss at. Within the obtuse angle formed by the tip lines 6 zigzag lines are embossed, and in the central panel under them four crowns, g, are represented; and under said panel is shown a number of stars in line, with hanging drops between them. Between the lilletsf, and directly above the boss at, is placed upon an ornamented support a spherical flower'pot, h, projecting above its base, and containing a standing plant showing a series of radiating leaves.
I claim- 1. Theherein-described design for articles of tableservice, consisting of a handle gradually expanding in two straight lines, 0 c, and provided with straight fillets f, diverging from the edge lines 0, with a series of ornamental figures placed between the converging lines 0 and f, and gradually diminishing in size toward the boss a, substantially as shown and described.
2. The design for articles of table-service, consisting of a handle having two converging fillets, c f, near each edge, and a panel. in the upper end, within which a series of crowns are placed, substantially as shown and described.
3. The design for articles of table-service, consisting of a handle having two converging fillets, c f, near each edge, and a spherical vase containing a standing plant between the inner fillets, f, substantially as shown and described.
