Description
o GRAHAM. SPOON HOLDER.
APPLICATION HLED JUNE 8.1916.
Patented Aug. 21,1917;

CAROLINE GRAHAM, OF WEST CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPOON-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAROLINE GRAHAM, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at West Chester, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in tdpoon- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved form of holder for spoons or other utensils. One object of my invention is to provide a holder of the above described type which can be quickly and easily attached to a dish, and which will be of such construction as to effectively hold a spoon or other utensil and prevent it from sliding bodily into thedish.
Another object is to so construct my improved holder that it may be used either to support the handle of the spoon or to directly support the bowl of the spoon.
A. further object is to so make my improved holder that it can be manufactured quickly and at a low cost.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved holder.
F ig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the holder illustrated in Fig. 1 as it appears when attached to a dish and supporting the handle of a spoon.
Fig. 3 is another fragmentary perspective view showing my improved holder support- I ing the bowl of a spoon, the handle of the spoon resting on the upper edge of the dish. Fig. 4 is a view of similar nature to Fig. 2, but showing a modified form of my invention. Referring to the drawings, the holder 1 is made of a single piece of wire bent intothe form illustrated and providing two rear recesses 2 and 3, two intermediate recesses 4 and 5, and a forward recess 6, the said forward recess 6 extending transversely to the recesses 2,3, 4, and 5.
The recesses 4, 5, and 6, are open at the top, and the recesses 2 and 8 are open at the bottom. The recesses 2 and 3 permit the holder to be slid over the upper edge 7 of a dish, and the free ends 8 of the wire forme ing the holder depend and extend downwardly on the outer surface of the dish, and the folds 9 and 10 which provide the re- Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedAug. 21, 1917.
Application filed June 8, 1916. Serial No. 102,390.
oesses 4 and 5, extend downwardly on the inside of the dish.
The upper portions of the recesses 4 and 5 are shaped as at 11 to receive the flanged edge 7 of the dish, since dishes are usually provided with a flange or bead at their upperedge'.
The extreme inner portion of the holder 12 is looped, and this loop forms the recess 6 above referred to, the bottom portion of the loop 12 acting to support the handle'of the spoon in a manner clearly shown in Figs. 2, and 4.
The recesses 4 and 5 which are formed by the depending loops or folds 9, provide means whereby the bowl of the spoon may be supported as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing, so that with my improved invention, the spoon may be supported in an inclined position as shown in Fig.2 with its bowl portion resting on the bottom of the dish or if it is desired to keep the spoonentirely out of the material in the dish, the bowl may be inserted within the recesses 4 and 5, and rest on the bottom of the folds 9.
lVhile the holder may be manually moved along the edge 7, it cannot accidentally come off, since the ends 8 and folds 9 are designed to frictionally engage the inner and outer surfaces of the dish. The extreme ends of the wire forming the holder are bent into loops 13, and these loops 13 act both a reinforcement for the ends 8 and also act to prevent any sharp edges from cutting or scratching the hand of the user. 7
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 4, the legs 14' and 15 assist in forming the recesses 4 and 5, and are of greater length than the corresponding legs shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, and since the loop 2 is formed by continuation of the wire from the legs 14 and 15, and is much shorter than the legs 14 and 15, the handle of the spoon when resting within the recess 6 provided by said loop 12, will be raised a considerable distance from the upper edge 7 of the dish. This form is especially desirable for use on dishes or pans which must necessarily be extremely hot, and in which the materialwithin the dish is also hot.
It will thus be noted that with this con struction, the spoon is kept relatively cool by being kept entirely free of the dish.
My invention may be made from a single piece of wire bent into the shape illustrated, and it acts in two capacities, namely, to
directly support the handle of the spoon, or to support the bowl thereof.
WVhile I have described the dish as having a flange, it will be noted that my holder may be used on dishes or other vessels in which the flange is omitted, since the recesses 2 and 3 are-capable of receiving a side of a dish Which may be straight or otherwise formed. Also, while I have described and illustrated my invention as a spoon holder, it will be noted that it may be used in connection with. a fork. or other utensil if desired.
Therecesses- 6 may be'of such width as to permit the narrow portion of the handle sliding therethrough, but prevent the wide portion of the spoon handle from sliding therethrough.
l/Vhile I- have described my invention as taking; a particular form it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I: am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come Within the scope of the appended claim;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A holder made of a continuous piece of wire, the ends of said wire being shaped to (iopiesof thisipatenti may; be obtained for depending folds in the wire ext-ending in transverse directions to said edge, the pertions of said wire forming the rear recesses being in the shape of upwardly projecting loops, the portions forming the intermediate recesses being in the shape of depending loops, said first 100p extending transversely to the other of said loops and forming means whereby one of the intermediate recesses and one of the rear recesses is located oneach side of the holder and spaced apart to provide room for the handle'of a utensil, substantially as descrlbed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
