H. EHLBRT. Font of Printing Types.
No.11,424-. Patented Sept. 23,1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEINRICH EHLERT, OF BERLIN, PRUSSIA, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES GONNERS SONS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPES.
Specification forming part of Design N 0. 1 1.424., dated September 23, 1879; application filed August 21, 1879- [Term of patent 7 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH EHLERT, of Berlin, Brandenburg, Prussia, (assignor to James Oonners Sons,) have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Types, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impression, to which reference is made.
My design is particularly intended for a font of types from which borders and ornamental surroundings for cards and other printed matter may be formed, and I will describe the various types of which it is composed.
No. 3, a figure composed of a shaded scroll having above it a shaded scroll, both of which terminate to the light.
Nos. 12 and 13 are sections of drapery partially folded.
No. 10, a tile composed of a square having within it a wreath, in the center of which is a dot.
No. 8, a representation of an urn or "ase.
Nos. 6 and 7 are representations of drapery partially folded.
No. l, a section of a cord.
No.19, a compound molding, the upper molding composed of a light line, below which is placed a second light line followed by a heavy line, with a space between the light lines; the
lower molding composed of two parallel light lines followed by a heavy line. The space between the two moldings has placed within it, about centrally, two cencentric squares placed diagonally.
N o. 2 represents a capital.
No.9 represents an ornament used upon the end of a ban ner-pole.
No. 11, a corner-piece composed of three right-angled lines, within which is placed a dot followed by a circle ornamented by two concentric cruciform figures, followed by a section of a cruciform figure shaded by horizontal and vertical light lines.
No. 3, a figure composed of a shaded scroll having above it a shaded scroll, both of which terminate to the left.
N o. 22, a corner-piece or section of a border composed of a line running horizontally, then vertically, then horizontally a short distance,
then angularly, and then horizontally. The upper portion of this line is light, its lower portion heavier. Within this figure is placed a second figure, composed, as to its upper horizontal and vertical portion, upon the left, of a light line followed by a heavy line, and as to its lower horizontal portion, of two light lines, which form a square in the left lower corner.
Nos. 4, 5, 17, l4, 16, 15, and 18 are sections representing fringe-like ornaments.
No. 23, the reverse of No. 22.
Nos. 20 and 21 are bases, to be used for the column shown in No. 41.
Nos. 24 and 25 are sections of molding orna- I mented by a series of light vertical lines. In N o. 24 a rosette is added upon the left; in No. 25 upon the right. In No. 24, also, a portion of the upper surface rises augularly to the left, and in No. 25 to the right.
Nos. 28 and 29 are apex members composed of lower molding composed of a light line above a heavy line, and the upper molding composed of a light line followed by a light and heavy line, the faces of the apex members adorned by the scroll-work, followed by a series of dots.
No. 26, the representation of a banneret, the
face shaded by a series of light vertical lines,
and ornamented by the tendril-like ornament, as shown.
No. 36, a center-piece or ornament composed of a vase of flowers.
Nos. 35 are sections of molding, the upper portion of which consists of a heavy line above alight line, the lower portion consisting of two light lines. The space between these is ornamented centrally by a rosette, upon each side of which are a series of short angular light lines between a light line above and a heavier line below.
No. 27, a section of a square, the'outer lines of which are heavy, followed by lighter lines. Within this section of the square is placed a second sectional square or series of sectional squares, the outer one being formed by aheavy line and the inner ones of lighter lines. The space between the outer sectional square and the inner one, formed of the heavy line, is shaded by a series of light parallel lines.
Nos. 33, 30, 31, and 34 are sections of drapery.
No.38, a center-piece, the center of which is ornamented by a rosette, upon the right and left of which is the scroll-work rising from a molding composed of the light lines, below which is placed a heavy line, the space between the scrolls and the molding being ornamented by a series of light vertical lines.
No.37, a section of drapery adorned by a rosette, from which depends a tassel.
Nos. 39, 47, 48, and'EtO. represent drapery partially folded.
Nos. 42 and 43 are corner-pieces composed of the triglyphs surmounted by the scrollwork, as shown.
Nos. 45 and 46 are sections of molding similar to Nos. 35, save that the upper portions are adorned by leaves, as shown.
No. 44, a center-piece. The lower portion consists of a curved line having the angular terminations, as shown, shaded above by two lighter lines of similar character. Above these are placed the curved leaf -1ike ornaments; above this the figure with inclined sides, in the center of which is placed the spearlike figure, from the upper portion of which, on each side, proceed the curved lines terminating in a dot. Above is placed the Waving line, curved centrally and shaded by lighter lines.
Nos. 32 and 41 are representations of columns.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new is The design for a font of printing-types, substantially as shown and described.
- HEINRICH EHLERT. In presence of BERTHOLD R01, EDWARD P. MACLEAN, HERMANN EHLERT, E. LAHAYN.
