DESIGN FOR CADDY.

Specification forming part of Design No. 10,542, dated March 19, 1878; application filed March 13, 1878. [Term of patent 31} years.]

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN Non'ron, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented acertain new and useful Design for Can or Caddy and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying photograph, and the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in a new and improved design for a can or caddy used for retailing teas, coffees, and spices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The design is fully illustrated in the accompanying photograph.

A represents a can or caddy of any suita ble dimensions, having four vertical sides, a curved base, and overhanging convex top, and also having four vertical panels at its corners, curved base, and overhanging convex top to match the sides throughout.

The top embraces. the following points of the design: four wide sections, B, concave in form, and four narrow sections, 0, also concave in form from the ball F downward to the point D, from whence they curve inwardly to meet the vertical sides and panels, to which they are joined on the line of the point a. This configuration produces the efl'ect of a projecting roll overhanging the vertical sides and panels on all sides of the can. At any suitable point from the top, as at E, an opening may be left for filling the can. The top is surmounted by a ball, F, and point G.

The sides a and panels a" are vertical, and of suitable width to correspond with the sides and corners of the top; and to ornament these panels I prefer to use raised medallion figures, in accordance with my patent of November 7, 1877. The sides are ornamented with landscapes, portraits, 850.

The base embraces the following points of the design: four wide convex sections, H, and four narrow convex panel-sections, I, being at the top of about equal width with the corresponding vertical sides a and panels a", and to which they are joined at the line indicated by the letter J. From this point they curve outwardly and down to the bottom of the can, forming a base made in eight convex sections. In one or more of the sides of the base are doors opening up into the can for removing the contents.

It will be seen from this detailed description that the outlines or configuration of this design are graceful and pleasing to the eye, as each section of the eight, commencing at top, gradually increases in width (except in the verti cal portions) until they terminate at the bottom of the caddy, and the general character of the design is entirely new and novel.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The design for a can or caddy consisting of the concave top sections B and 0, ball F, point G, the convex overhanging roll D, vertical sides a, panels a, and curved convex basesections H and I, substantially as shown and described.
