To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB N. FAUsr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Body-Conformers,

of which the following is a specification.

Thls invention relates to body conformers, and it is herein illustrated as applied toa shoulder brace, although it is not limited; to such, certain features being applicable to;

other articles of apparel.

One of the objects of the invention is to produce a shoulder brace which allows great freedom of movement of the body while retaining the shoulders in proper position.

Another object is to provide a brace or similar article of apparel in which the belt is movably mounted upon the lacing cord.

Another ob ect is to produce a shoulder brace 1n whlch a single lacing cord may be used.

A further object is to provide abrace from which the lacing cord may be readily removed when desired, and a new one substituted.

Another object is to provide an improved means for fastening the parts together which is neat andstrong.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the back of a shoulder brace embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the front thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the means for fastening the shoulder straps to the body portion. Fig. A is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a buckle for adjusting the shoulder strap. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a section on line 6 6 of Fig. 1.

That embodiment of the invention which I have chosen for illustration comprises a back portion consisting, in this instance, of two sections 1 which are held together by a lacing cord 2 and each of which carries a shoulder strap 3. Preferably means such as that shown in Figs. 3 and A is employed for securing said shoulder straps to the back sections 1. As herein shown the back sections 1 are formed of a double thickness of cloth 1 1 the edges being secured together by a strip or binding 1. At the point where a shoulder strap 3 is to be fastened to the back section 1, one thickness of the cloth is left loose from the binding 4:, and the loose portion turned under to lie between the layers of cloth. The end or the strap is then inserted beneath the inturned portion and one or more lines of stitching 5 run through the parts, thus forming a strong, neat connection. It will be seen that this construction obviates the necessity for first hemming or binding the raw edge of cloth 1 and then sewing in the shoulder strap, the two steps being accomplished in one operation, thereby saving time and obtainlng a neater connection.

If desired, buckles6 may be used to adjust the shoulder straps to lit the wearer,

said buckles preferably, though not neces sarily, being located at the lower point of junction of the shoulder straps to the side pieces 1 and being secured to said slde pleces 1n the manner ust descrlbed, the portion 7 constituting a tab that lies between the buckle and the body.

If desired, a strip 8 of elastic material. may be inserted at any convenient point in each of the shoulder straps 3, in order to allow said strap to yield to accommodate the movements of the body. A lacing cord 9 may be used to prevent the straps 3 from slipping off the shoulders.

The back portion is secured upon the body by means of a belt 10 formed of two similar sections each haviiigopenings 11 therein adjacent one end for the reception of the lacing cord 2. A portion 12 of said belt may be formed of elastic material and the belt may have a buckle 13 or other means for adjusting said belt upon the body. The portion. 12 may be fastened to the remainder of the belt in the manner described for fixing the shoulder straps 3 to the back sections 1.

The manner of lacing the back pieces 1 and the belt together, as herein shown, is such that any tension upon the belt tends to draw the back sections together, and vice versa. The lacing cord 2 is a single cord, and, as will be seen, is readily removable from the portions 1 and belt 10, when it is desired to renew said cord. The two ends 2 of the cord may be passed through the eyelets in the back pieces and said ends tied together on the outer side of the back portion, as shown.

It will be observed that the belt is slidablc upon the cord 2 and that in accommodating the movements of the body, the back sections 1 and the belt sections travel in opposite directions, that is, when the portions 1 are separating from each other, the belt sections are being drawn toward one another.

I wish to have it understood that I do not limit my invention to shoulder braces inasmuch as it may be applied to Various articles of apparel; neither do I wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described, as various modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a body conformer, in combination, a back portion comprising two sections having openings therein near their adjacent edges; a belt comprising two sections having openings therein near their adjacent ends; and a single lacing cord passing through the openings in said back sections and said belt sections and interlacing all of said sections, said cord being freely slidable in either direction through the openings in said belt sections.

2. An article of wearing apparel having a portion formed of a plurality of layers of material, a strap, one end of which is interposed between said layers of material, the edge of one of said layers of material being turned under to also lie between said layers, and a line of stitching passing through said layers, said strap and said inturned edge.

3. A body conformer comprising a body portion formed of a plurality of layers of material, shoulder straps, one end of each of said shoulder straps being interposed between said layers of material, the edge of one of said layers of material being turned under to also lie between said layers, and a line of stitching passing through said layers, said shoulder straps and said inturned edge.

4:. A body conformer comprising a body portion formed of a plurality of layers of material, the edges of said layers being bound by an edging strip, a portion of the edge of one of said layers being left unbound by said edging strip, said unbound edge portion being turned under, shoulder straps, one end of each of said straps being interposed between said layers of material, a line of stitching passing through said layers of material, said inturned edge and said strap, and a line of stitching passing through said layers of material, said edging strip and said strap.
