FLEXIBLE BUTTON-FASTENING FOR CORSETS OR OTHER GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,037, dated July 6, 1886.
Application filed November 18, 1885. Serial No. 183,206. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SHERWOOD B. FERRIS, of Lakewood, Ocean county, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Button-Fastenings for Corsets and other Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to flexible button fastenings, and is mainly designed for use on corsets, but is also applicable to other articles or garments. By the term flexible button-fastening is meant a button carried bya tape or flexible strip, either single or double, secured at its one end to the article or garment, and carrying the button in a pendent or flexible manner at any desired distance from such point of fastening of the tape or strip, whereby, among other advantages, increased facility is afforded for connecting and disconnecting the button with the button-hole, over or as compared with a direct or rigid attachment of the button to the article or garment. In such flexiblebutton-fastening the button has usually been secured to the tape or flexible strip by sewing orriveting, which not only exposes the button to easy detachment on subjecting it to ajerk or heavy strain, but it necessitates two separate attachments-that is to say, first, the button to the tape or strip by a separate and special attachment, as by sewing, riveting, 820.; and, secondly, the attachment of the tape or strip-to the article or garment.
My invention dispenses with one of these special attachments, and gives a more secure or better hold of the button; and it consists in a corset or garment provided with. buttons carried by tapes or flexible strips passed forward and backward successively through the center portions of the buttons and secured to the garment at their terminal portions under cover and inclosure by a seamed portion of the garment, whereby time is economized, and a neat,
1 strong, and durable attachment is obtained, as
hereinafter set forth. In some cases the tape, flexible strip, or cord which carries the button may be elastic, and in others be inelastic.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a front perspective view ever, as closed by buttons down the front, and
as having buttons at the waist-line for attachment of the skirt; also as having one of a pair of buttons at the bottom of the hip portion of the corset adapted to fasten stocking-supporters to. Any or all of these sets of buttons may be used, as desired. In each and every case, however, the buttons are flexibly connected with the article of dress by tapes or cords at any suitable distance from and to one side of the points of attachment of the tapes or cords to the article of dress, to facilitate their connection with and disconnection from the but ton-holes- -as, for instance, the button-holes d, with which the buttons b down the front of the corset engage. This makes what is known as a flexible button-fastening. The flexible tapes or cords, however, are directly connected with the buttons by passing said tapes or cords any number of times backward and forward through perforations in the eyes or center portions of the buttons, thus directly carrying the buttons, and doing away with all riveting or sewing of the-buttons onto the tapes or cords, and providing a much stronger connection of the buttons with the tapes or cords. Thus the tapes 0, which carry the buttons 1), that unite the two sections of the corset down the front, are threaded or passed (see Figs. 1 and 2) first through one perforation and then returned through another perforation in the body or center portions of the buttons; and, furthermore, the tapes thus doubled are secured at their inner or separate end portions to the corset by and under cover orinclosure of aseamed portion, 6, of the goods, secured by one or more rows ofstitchingf, which may extend all down the front of the corset, and be readily and rapidly made by an ordinary sewing-machine. This makes a neat, strong, and durable attachment, theportions of the tapes which are secured to the article or garment being under cover and bound to their places between two or more thicknesses of material. It forms a quick way, too, of putting on the buttons. Each button b at the bottom of the hip portion of the corset is similarly carried and connected; but. instead of a tape, an elastic cord, 0, as seen in Fig. 1, may be used, the ends of said cord being secured, as in the case of the tape, by stitching-as, for instance, by an under cover of a seamed portion, 6, of the goods. Other buttons on different parts of the corset may be similarly carried and fastened by flexible tapes or cords, elastic or inelastic.
In some cases provision may be made for adjustably connecting the buttons with the tapes or cords which carry them. This is shown for the buttons 1)" b on the waist-line, used to attach the skirt to the corset. Thus, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the tape a, which is threaded or passes forward and backward through perforations in the eye or center of the button b and is seen red at its one end under a seamed portion, e", of the garment, or otherwise, by stitching, has its opposite end portion loose or pendent. This provides for adjusting the button at any desired point on or along the tape 0'. A similar arrangement is shown for the button If, so far as its adjustment on or along the tape a" is concerned; but in this case said tape, after the button has been adjusted on or along it, as desired, has its opsite ends secured under or by seamed portions 0* e of the garment. or otherwise, by stitching. The tape a, too, is shown as-threaded, or passes through a greater number of perforations in the eye or center portion of the button.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In corsets and other garments or articles of wear. provided with flexible button-fastenings,
' the article or garment provided with buttons b, carried by tapes or flexible strip 0, passed forward and backward successively through the center portions of the buttons and secured to the garment attheir terminal portions under cover and inclosure by aseamed portion of the garment, essentially as shown and described.
