ATENT SAMUEL A. MYERS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,144, dated January 13, 1903.
Application filed September 18,1902. Serial No. 123.814. (N model.)
T0 at whom, it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. Mvnns, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gentlemens Trousers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to gentlemens trousers, is designed to improve the appearance of the trousers when worn without suspenders and cause them to fit more closely and at the same time more smoothly over the hips, and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings and to the claims hereto appended and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
. Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of a pair of trousers embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the upper portion of the same, drawn to an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a partialinside elevation illustrating the tongue or flap for covering one of the gore-lacings', drawn to a still larger scale; and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, 1 1 represent the two legs of a pair of trousers. 2 is the waistband. 3 3 are flaps covering the hip-pockets. 4 4 are loops through which a belt may be passed, if
one is worn. Just above each hip-pocket a gore or V-shaped section of the cloth of which the trousers are made is cut away, and the adjacent edges of said gore have firmly stitched thereto bindings of leather 5 5,'in which are set a series of eyelets 6, through which the lacing 7 is passed and when drawnsufficiently tight is tied in a bow-knot, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. A nearly-triangular flap or tongue 8, composed of one thickness of thin leather and one thickness of cloth, is secured along one edge to the inside of the waistband by the same line of stitching that secures one of the bindings 5, the leather and cloth composing said flap being stitched together about their other edges, as shown. The leather portion of said flap 8 has set therein in near proximity to each other two small eyelets 9, through each of which is passed the tape 10, arranged obliquely to the top edge of the waistband and secured at each end to the inner lining of the waistband, so that the eyelets 9 may slide freely on said tape as the lacing is adjusted to bring the edges of the leather bindings nearer to or farther from each other and at the same time will prevent said flap from being folded back upon itself or upon the lining of the waistband.
By the use of the lacing of the V-shaped slits over each hip, as shown, the trousers are readily adjusted to a perfect fit of the waist and hips without any overlapping or puckering of the waistband at the center of the back.
It is next to impossible to set metal eyelets in a textile fabric so that they will not tear out in a very short time, and as a consequence the eyelets when desired in textile fabrics have been worked by hand, and to obviate this objection I apply the leather bindings 5 to the adjacent edges of the V-shaped slits or gores and set the eyelets in the leather, as shown, which insuresa firm and permanent attachment of the eyelets, and by using a soft brightly-colored leather contrasting with the color of the cloth of which the trousers are made and having the eyelets and lacing of the same color as the leather binding a very neat and tasty effect is produced when the trousers are worn without suspenders or vest.
The object of the flap or tongue 8 is to prevent the shirt or other clothing being seen through the eyelets or between the edges of the bindings 5 when not drawn close together, and therefore it is desirable that that portion of said flap that lies next to the bind ings should be of leather of the samecolor as the bindings 5.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
I. In a pair of trousers provided with alaced opening in the waistband, the combination therewith of a flap permanently attached to the inside of the waistband along one edge of said opening and extending across said opening; and means for adjustably attaching the opposite edge of said flap to the inner face of the waistband on the side of said opening 0pposite to its permanent attachment to said Waistband.
2. In a pair of trousers provided with alaced opening in its waistband, the combination therewith of the flap 8 fixedly attached to the inside of the waistband by one of its edges along one edge of said opening, and extending across said opening; a pair of eyelets set in the loose end of said flap; and the tape 10 passed through both of said eyelets and secured at each end to the inner face of the waistband, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 16th day of September, A. D. 1902.
