W. MoGA-BE. BUTTON FASTENING TON GARMENTS.
No. 425,899. Patented Apr. 15, 1890.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM MCOABE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE ST.- LOUIS PATENT OFFIcE.
CORSET COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON-FASTENING F OR GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 425,899, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed January 23, 1889. Serial No. 297,271. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MCCABE, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Attaching Buttons to Corsets, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a perspective view of a corset provided with my improvement. Fig. II is a detail view illustrating the invention, and Figs. III and IV are similar views illustrating slight modifications.
My invention is an improved means for securing buttons to corsets and other similar articles and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body of a corset, which maybe of any desired form. One of the meeting edges of the corset is provided with button-holes 2, and the other edge is provided with buttons 3, having customary eyes.
My invention relates to the manner of securing the buttons 3 to the corset, and consists of a string or tape 4, which is passed through the eyes of the but-tons and secured near one edge of the corset by means of short pieces of tape or like material located at the buttons.
set, leaving, as shown in Fig. II, two loops or portions 7, that are not stitched to the corset. Between these loops 7 and the body of the corset the tape or string at is passed. It is first inserted through one of the loops 7, then through the eyes 8 of the buttons 3, and then through the other loop 7, and from thence to The tape is stitched at 6 to the corthe next pair of loops 7, where another button is securedin the manner described. In this manner the buttons can be very quickly secured to the corset by a'single string or piece of tape 4, which, when it is required to wash the corset, can be withdrawn, and the buttons thus removed.
Another advantage of this construction is that as each button is taken hold of to insert it through its hole 2in the other edge'of the corset the tape will permit it to be pulled slightly from the garment, affording a better finger-hold and making it capable of being more easily inserted in the hole 2.
Still another advantage of this invention is that each button can be tied by its eye to the body-loop by means of the string or tape, so as to prevent any distortion of the corset or garment when pulling on the buttons.
In Fig.1II, I have shown a slight modification, where but a single loop 7 is employed, the tape or string 4 being passed through the loop, then through the button, and. again through the loop, and from thence to the next loop.
In Fig. IV,Ihave shown still another form, where both ends of the tape 7 are secured to the garment on the same side of. the loop, which will be plainly understood.
I claim as my invention The herein-described button-fastening for garments, consisting of the loops 7, attached to the garment or to abutton-strip, the lacingtape 4, and the buttons, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
WM. McOABE. In presence of- GEo. H. KNIGHT, EDW. S. KNIGHT.
