Description

nitled tatz psom owoc.
MAisoN o. AMEs, OF HARTFORD, oONNECTIGUT, AssIGNoR To HIMsELr ANI) w.
EDGAR SIMONDS, OF SAME PLAOE.
` Letters Patent No. 96,072, dotad Octobe'r 26, 1869.
IMPROVMENT- IN STILTS.
The Schedu1e-refex'red to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Tooall whom tt 'may concc-rn:
Be it known 'that I, MAsON O. AMEs, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement iu Stilts; and I declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
My improvement relates to the ordinary stilt used by boys, and sometimes by men.
The letter A designates the .ordinary stick or bar of Wood which forms the upright part of the stilt.
The letter designates the foot-rest, which is shown in the figure as made of cast-metal, (iron.)
It may as Well be made ,of Wood, though, of course, if so-rnade, it cannot` be made so light and airy as when made' of metal.
The foot-rest B has flangesupon each side, one of which, b, is shown in Figure 1.
These flanges, s'liding upon the stick A, keep the foot-rest in proper position.
It will be'readily understood that this foot-rest, made as so far described, Will readily slide up and down on the stick A.
The letter O designates the clamp-link.
The side c fits under the foot-rest.
The side cl has two sharp points, o2 and c.
.Supposing all the parts to be in the position shown in lig. 1, When pressure is applied downward on the foot-rest, the points c2 and c will take sharp hold of the stick A, and will support any weight that the foot-rest will bear without breaking. v
This clamp-link (l is made of metal, either (fast or wrought.
It will he readily understood, without furthcr explanation, that in using this stilt the foot-rest can bo instantly secured at any dcsh'ed point on the stick A, and is, therefore, a vast improvenumt over all other stilts.
I claim, as niy inventioiri 1. The foot-rest B and the clamp-Iiuk O, when consti'ucted as descrihed for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the foot-rest B and clamp-` link O, when constructed and arranged as described for the purpose described.
3. The combination of the foot-rest B, cla'inp-link C, and stick A, when constructed and arrangod as doscribed for the purpose descrjbed.
Dated May 26, 1869.
M. C. AMES.
