JOHN JACKSON, OF OWEGO, NE WYORK.
Letters Patent No. 83,170, dated October 20, 1868.
1 IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-SPRINGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JACKSON, of Oweg0, in
he county of 'lioga, in the State of New York, have .nvented a new Adjustable Wagon or Carriage-Spring; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters .of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the use or combination of the twist of a steel rod, the circular arm, the chain or strap for the arm to play on the ratchet-wheel, and lever to adjust or regulate'the spring to the weight required to carry.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my carnage or wagon-spring of an evenlytempered steel rod, as shown at A in the accompanying drawings.
' B is a circular arm, with a square hole to receive the spring.
0 is a chain or strap for the arm to play on.
One
end is to be attached to the arm B, near the spring, the other end to be attached to the goose-neck or 1001- ster D.
E is a lever. F is aclick to the ratchet-wheel. G is a ratchet-wheel, with a square hole in the centre to receive the opposite end of the spring from the arInB. H is the handle of the lever, showing how the spring is operated upon. By raising the lever thereof, the spring is increased in power.
By lowering the lever, the power of the spring is lessened. I
What I claim my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
, The combination of the twist of steel, the circular arm, the strap or chain for the arm to play on,- the'ratv chet-wheel and lever to adjust or change the power of the spring to carry either a light or heavy load. I
JOHN J AOKSON.
