WILLIE T. SWAIN, OF GOSNELL, ARKANSAS.
SAW-VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 21, 1909.
Patented Apr. 5, 1910.
Serial No. 503,500.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIE T. SWAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gosnell, in the county of Mississippi, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to bee. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to saw Vises and has special reference to a form of portable saw vise adapted to be used by lumbermen and others in the woods.
One object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character so that they may be more readily carried from place to place.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for securing such a device to the top of a stump or the like.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of a saw vise having a foldable base with an improved form of securing means attached thereto together with means to hold a saw removably carried on the base.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a top plan view of a saw vise constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the saw holding members removed.
The body or base of this invention comprises two portions 10 and 11 which are united by means of a hinge 12. These base members 10 and 11 are provided with a series of screw threaded apertures 13 wherein are held saw supporting members each comprising a body portion 14 havinga saw receiving slot 15 in the upper end thereof and a reduced screwthreadedportion 16 on the lower end which enables the saw holding member to be readily atta bed to the base. To this end the saw hol ing member is also made angular at the base so that it can be grasped by a wrench.
full width of the base so that there is nodanger of splitting the same. When not in use or when it is desired to carry this vise from one point to another the saw holding members are unscrewed and one of the base members folded on the other so that a very compact and readily portable package is thereby formed.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus describedthe invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a saw vise, a pair of base members foldable one upon the other and each provided with spaced screw threaded apertures; in combination with saw holding members each provided with a slotted upper end, a reduced threaded lower end adapted to fit the threaded apertures in the base, and an angular section immediately above the threaded portion to receive a wrench.
2. In a saw vise of the class described, a pair of base members hingedly connected and foldable one upon the other, a pair of eyes connected respectively to said base members, the base members being provided with suitable apertures therefrom and each of said eyes comprising a single strip of metal having its median portion bent to substantially circular form, parallel portions on each side thereof extending through the aperture in the respective base member, and
laterally bent ends projecting over said base member and covering the entire width thereof, and an attaching hook engaged in each W. B. RAYBURN, B. A. LYNCH.
