HENRY ADAMS, OF OWASA, IOWA.
COMBINATION SQUARE AND DBAFTING-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec.3,1912.
Application filed April 5, 1910. Serial No. 553,518.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at ()wasa, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Squares and Drafting-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drafting instruments and its leading object is to provide a device consisting of a double pair of pivotally and adjustably connected members so arranged that different angular relations can be established between the members and the device employed for providing various designs, especially including stair work and similar construction.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention relates to certain combinations, constructions and arrangement of parts clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device folded; Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the device arranged to form a square for the drafting of obtuse angles; Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the device applied for laying out stair work; Fig. A is a plan view of a modified construction showing the device employed as a compass; Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view' showing a pencil holding device; Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view showing a pivot connection.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 denote one pair of members of the device and '3 and 4: the other pair. The respective members of each pair are formed with unslotted end portions which are pivotally connected by means of screws 5 and clamping nuts 6 threaded on said screws. Each member is formed with a longitudinal slot 7 provided with suitable degree marks.
The member 8 is adjustably connected with the member 1 by means of hollow pivots 9 each of which is provided with an end flange 10 and a threaded end 12, on which a relatively thin nut 13 is threaded. Removable pivots 14 are adapted to be extended through the hollowpivot 9 to form a center about which the device may turn.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for WVhen the device is employed as a compass, a pencil holding member, consisting of a single strand of resilient wire 15 and formed to provide a pencil holding eye 16 and supporting arms 17 terminating in U-shaped clasps, is held in place by said clasps on the slotted members, said clasps slidably and resiliently engaging the opposite portion of said slotted members. The arms 17 are preferably disposed in diverging relation to each other so that they will hold the pencil 19 frictionally against the slotted member to which they are attached.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, is
1. A drafting instrument comprising a plurality of flat members provided with longitudinal slots, each member having an unslotted terminal portion of greater length than the width of said member, clamping screws connecting said unslotted terminal portions, a pivot extending through two of said slots, a clamping screw extending through the remaining two slots for holding said slotted members in various angular relations, two of said slotted members being adapted to be placed in rightangular relation and the remaining two members being adapted to be placed in endwise relation with their opposite edges alining, and a pencil holder consisting of a single strand of wire bent upon itself to provide a pencil gripping portion and diverging resilient terminals bent to form Us adapted to snugly fit in either one of said slots.
2. The combination with a drafting instrument having a longitudinal slot of a pencil retaining member formed of resilient wire to provide a pencil holding eye and diverging arms formed with terminal loops slidable in the slot of Said member and adapted to hold a pencil carried by said eye frictionally against the edge of said member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY ADAMS.
