COMBINATION BEVEL AND SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 59,319, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed September 12, 1903. Serial No. 172,936. (No model.)
To all whom, may concern.-
Be it known that we, LnwIs SCHUMACI-IER and HENRY SoHUMAoI-IER, citizens of the United States, residing at .Ooshocton, in the county of Ooshocton and State of Ohio, have invented anew and useful Combination Bevel and Square, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to measuring and gaging instruments for the use of carpenters and mechanics; and the object of our invention is an instrument of this character which shall be true and accurate in construction, which will remain in such condition under constant use, and which will not be liable to warp and become untrue from exposure to the weather.
Our invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our device having the parts arranged for use as a square. Fig. 2 is a perspective view or the device folded. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line L 4 of Fig. 3.
1n the construction of our bevel and square we employ a base A, which is longitudinally grooved on its upper surface at A, the groove extending from one end of the base to a point adjacent the opposite end, leaving at that end a head A which is longitudinally slotted at A, the slot alining but not communicating with the groove. This end portion rises slightly above the grooved portion of the base, thereby forming a shoulder A. The walls of the groove are beveled on their inner faces, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4. A bar B is adapted to slide on this base and has at one end a head, B, extending downwardly below the plane of the under surface of the bar, and this head is adapted to contact with an end of the base, the opposite end of the bar bearing against the shoulder A. The bar B has an elongated longitudinal slot B adjacent one end, and the head portion B is formed with a slot B The under surface of the bar B, with the exception of the head portion, is formed with a beveled longitudinal tongue Bfl-whieh fits and slides in the groove A. Two arms O of equal length are adapted to rest on the bar B, the meeting inner ends of these arms being oppositely angled, as shown at O. Each of these arms is formed with a longitudinal slot O adjacent their outer ends. To hold these parts together and at the same time permit their easy adjustment with respect to each other, we employ bolts threaded adjacent one end, washers litting over the bolts, and nuts adapted to be threaded on the bolts and bear on the washers, a wellknown construction readily understood. These fastening means will be spoken of collectively as set-screws, and the set-screws D and D are employed to hold the bar B to the base A. The base A is longitudinally slotted at A adjacent the head A, the slot A* coming under the non-slotted portion of the bar B. The bolt of the set-screw 1) passes through the slot A", and the belt of the setscrew D passes through the slot B of the bar B. By loosening these set-screws the bar B can be moved along the base A. The bolts of the set-screws l) and 'D pass, respectively, through the slots A and B? and through the slots of the arms O, the washers and nuts of these set-screws bearing on the arms and binding one of them to the head B of the bar and the other to the head A of the base A.
The tongue-and-groove feature of the base and bar prevents rocking movement of the bar on the base and prevents warping of the base, and the barB will also slide at all times true and accurately on the base. The arms O can be quickly adjusted at any desired angle to the bar B and then clamped in said adjusted position by the set-screws 1) and 1). By drawing the bar B outwardly and spacing the head B from the end of the base the width or thickness of a board or other object can be accurately determined in a manner that will be obvious from an inspection of Fig. 1.
Other advantages of our bevel and square will be noted by those skilled in the use of instruments of this character and in the art in which it is used.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what We desire to secure by Letters Patent,'
and claim as new, is
1. A device of the kind described comprising a base having a beveled groove extending longitudinally from one end of said base to a point adjacent the opposite end, a shoulder formed at the inner end of said groove, a bar having a head formed at its outer end and a beveled tongue formed longitudinally on its under surface, said tongue being adapted to fit the groove, means for adjustably clamping said bar to the base, and arms removably and pivotally connected, one to the bar, and one to the base, as and for the purpose described.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a base having a longitudinal, beveled groove extending to one end of the base, the said base having a longitudinal slot communicating With the groove and a short slot formed adjacent one end, a bar having a do wn- Wardly-extending head formed atone end, a beveled tongue extending the length of the bar from the head said tongue being adapted to fit in the groove, and the said bar being longitudinally slotted adjacent the end carrying the head, arms slotted longitudinally adjacent each end, a set-screw having a bolt passing through the slot of the base communicating with the groove and through the bar, a set-screw passing through the slot of the bar and through the base, and set-screws adapted to adjustably clamp one of the arms to the non-grooved end of the base and the other arm to the head of the bar, substantially as described.
