Description

Noi 793,272. PATENTED JUNE 27, 1905, W. L. BORATE.
MULTIPLE TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED APR.8, 1905.
NITED STATES Patented June 27, 1905.
VILLIAM L. BORATE, OF ROCHESTER, NElV YORK.
MULTIPLE TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,272, dated June 27, 1905.
Application filed April 3, 1905. Serial No. 254,570.
To a. lull/01w it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM L. BORATE, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Multiple Tools, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
My invention is a multiple tool for mechanics use, more particularly for doing light work in the metals, as in the machinists trade, the object of the invention being to produce a handy and convenient combined tool adapted for various uses.
The invention is hereinafter fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which, with the reference characters marked thereon, form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device with a part broken away and other parts shown in two positions by full and by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an edge view seen as indicated by arrow 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the left extension-piece detached, seen as indicated by arrow 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device with the lever-handles opened out or spread, a part being broken out. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the handle detached and associated tool, parts being axially sectioned. Fig. 6 shows the right extension-piece detached, apart being broken away to uncover the needle.
Referring to the parts shown, A A are a pair of similar lever-handles of metal, crossing each other and joined at the point of intersection by a pivot-pintle a, the levers being formed with opposing terminal jaws t t and together constituting a pair of pincers. The lever A is provided with a curved metallic strip or graduated tongue 1), Figs. 1, 2, and 4, crossing the lever A and in the middle longitudinal plane of the two levers. This tongue is for the most part concentric with the pintle a and secured at its ends to the lever A at points respectively above and below said pin, the lever A being formed with an opening 0, Fig. 2, through which to receive the tongue. A thumb-screw d, threaded in the lever A in position to have its point press the tongue 1), serves to hold the two lever-handles in positions of adjustment upon the pivot-pin a.
The extreme ends of the curved lever-handles A A are separated or apart and provided with detachable extension pieces or members B C, held to place, respectively, by clampingscrews e 6. These extension-pieces curve in ward and meet at their extreme ends and hold terminal needles giving to the structure as a whole the nature of a pair of dividers or a pair of compasses, for which two uses the tool or instrument may be readily and conveniently applied. The pivoted levers A A constitute legs for the instrument, which may be accurately set in any case as desired by means of the graduated tongue I) and held in position of adjustment by means of the clamp-screwd, as stated. The needle points one or the other of them also adapt the device to be used as an ordinary seratch-awl when such service is required in any given case.
The part C is divided longitudinally for a distance upward from its free end, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, there being a detachable part 9 held normally to the main part by a clamp-screw h, between which two parts the associated needle is held. The lever A is likewise formed with a separate part or clamping-block i, Figs. 1, 3, and 4, secured in place by a clamping-screw 1c, the longitudinal meeting faces of the part 'i and the main part B being in the middle longitudinal plane of the lever and in the plane of the corresponding meeting faces of the parts C and g opposite. This clamping part i acts with the corresponding part 9 to hold a saw Z, Fig. 4:, or similar detachable element or agency as the nature of the work being done in any given case may require, the levers A A being widely opened or spread, as shown, and secured in position by the clamp-screw (Z.
The part B is formed with a threaded aperture m, Fig. 3, forming a rest in which to insert the reduced end of a handle D, Figs. at and 5, when the saw is employed. This handle consists in part of a threaded stem or shaft n, the reduced threaded end 0 of which being adapted to enter the aperture 'm, as shown.
The stem 71 has near one end two similar cylindrical threaded parts 1) p, divided by an intervening collar, either of which threaded parts may be inserted in the threaded orifice of the ferrule r of the handle, Which renders the shaft 12, reversible in the body of. the handle, the end 8 opposite the threaded parts being given the form of a useful tool, as a screw-driver.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A multiple tool for mechanics use consisting of a pair of pincers having detachable extensionieces attached to the ends of the lever-han les, needles carried by said extension-pieces, and means for holding the handles in relative positions of adjustment upon the pintle, said extension-pieces having movable clamping-blocks, and means for secur- WILLIAM L. BORATE.
