UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
J OIIN E. SPATZ, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,137, dated March 27, 1900.
Application tiled December 26,1899. Serial No. 741,555. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN E. SPATZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Saw and Adjustable Square, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of the present invention is to embody in a single instrument a handsaw and an adjustable square, whereby the laying out or the markings of the angles to be cut and the subsequent sawing of the material may be effected in a considerably-shorter space of time than is ordinarily required where separate instruments are used.
Vith this object in view my invention consists in a combined saw and adjustable square and in theA peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the clamp.
The reference-letter A designatesthe saw, which is provided' with the usual cutting edge B and a straight-edge C, the latter constituting the saw-back and also the stationary member of the adjustable square.
D represents the saw-handle, which is attached centrally to the saw in the usual manner.
E represents the movable or adjustable member of the square, which is in the form of an arm having a pivotal connection, preferably, with the handle and provided with means, hereinafter described, for holding it at different angles relatively to the straightedge or saw-back.
The arm is provided with aperforated ear F, arranged near one end of the arm and extending laterally from the upper edge or top of the latter, as plainly shown in Fig. l. The body portion of the arm is adapted to rest normally against the shoulder Gr, formed by the portion of the handle-front which extends beyond one sideof the saw, the arm being normally at right angles to the back.
II is the pivot-pin, which extends through the ear F and pivotally connects the arm to the handle.
As shown in the drawings, the upper end of thearm extends at some distance beyond the straight-edge and at its lower end extends in proximity to the cutting edge. Near its lower end the movable member of the square is provided with a scaled segment I, and .I designates a clamp secured by means of suitable screws a to the handle, through which the segment is adapted to pass and be secured.
K represents a thumb -screw constituting the clamping member of the clamp, which is adapted to bear against the scaled segment to hold the latter in the desired position. The straight-edge or saw-back has marked thereon graduations, such as L, and the handle is provided with a pointer M, which is arranged in operative relation to the scaled segment, as shown.
From the above description of my invention it will be readily seen that a very simple'device is provided, which may be cheaply manufactured and which in use will save a considerable period of time, as the square is always conveniently near the operator and no time is wasted by the latter, as would be the case if separate instruments were employed. L
What I claim as my invention is In a combined saw and adjustable square,
kthe combination with the saw proper having a straight-edge formed thereon constituting the saw-back and the stationary member of the square, the movable or adjustable square member comprising the arm pivoted upon the saw in operative relation to the back, a segment carried by the arm, and a clamp through which the segment passes for holding the latter in dierent positions relative to the straight-edge, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN sPArZ.
Witnesses L. J. WHITTEMORE, H. C. SMITH.
