GAGE FOR SCISSORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1908.
Application filed August 5,1908. Serial No. 168.362.
MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a,
resident of Lynchburg, county of Campbell, State 01' V1rg1n1a, have mventod a new and useful Improvement 111 Gages l'or Scissors, of
which the following is a specification, rel'erence being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is designed for the use ol" tailors, dressmakers, and others, in mittiiig cloth or other material into strips which shall be of uniform width throughout, by keeping the cutting edge of the scissors on which the gage is used always an equal distance from the edge of the material being cut.
It is particularly adapted for cutting rutl'les, etc., without the necessity of creasing or marking the cloth.
The accompanying drawings illustrate one form of embodiment of my invention, in which Figure 1 is a view of the gage as it appears When attached to scissors; llig. 2 is a detail View of the clamp, or means for attaching the device to scissors; and Fig. is a sectional View of the gage, also showing the slide.
My invention consists essentially ol a clamp, A, a frame or arm, BB, and a slide, 0.
I make the clamp in two parts, an upper and a lower member, or jaw. The part of the clamp which engages the stem of the scissors is shaped something like pincers, and will fit any ordinary scissors. The lower jaw of the clamp forms one member of the pincers, while the upper j aw, or member, of the clamp not only forms part of the pincers which engages the scissors stem, but has in it an aperture through which the arm. of the gage passes, and is held in position, with the aid of a thumb-screw (a). in this aperture the arm can slide back and forth, and be adjusted to scissors of di'llerent lengths. The screw, Z), passes through both of the members of the clamp, and firmly holds the clamp to the stem of the scissors, whether the stem be large or small.
The slide, C, is adapted to be moved and set at any point on the scale, to regulate the width ol' the material to be cut. The arm ol" the gage is so bent at (l as to give it a tend.- cncy to spring apart, exerting sullicient pressure on the inner surl'ace ol" the slide to hold it at any point it may be placed on the scale, and yet permit it to be moved with case when it is desired to change the width of strips cut. .ll' prclerrcd, a small screw may be used to hold the slide in place.
The frame or arm made ol a bar or narrow strip ol' metal, bent in the shape of an angle, as shown in the drawing. The bend at (1 terms a slot through which the material being cut passes, the slot being at an angle to the cutting edge of the scissors; a second bend occurs at c, lrom which point the arm .runs parallel with the scissors blades to the point where the clamp is attached to the scissors stem, passing through the aperture hcretol'ore described.
\Yhat l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
.1. in a gage l'or scissors, the combination ol' an arm made of a piece or bar of metal bent at an angle, a slide on said arm held by l'riction at any point desired, and a clamp engaging the stem of one of the scissors members; the clamp having an aperture within which the arm may be moved back and forth, and a screw being provided for holding the arm iirmly in any desired position, so that the gage may be adjusted to scissors of dill'erent lengths.
2. A gage l'or scissors comprising an arm, a slide held in position on said arm by friction, and a clamp engaging the stem of one of the scissors members and being secured thereto by a thumb screw; said clamp being composed o'l' two separate parts in one of which is an aperture herein the arm can move, a thumb screw being provided for holding the arm in position.
.ln testimony whorcol" I have signed this spcci'lication .in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
