BUTTON HOLE CUTTER. No. 384,710. Patented June 19, 1888.
q mtweweo 'VVUQ'VVtOZ. 3889). 8mm 8 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. PETERS, OF LANCASTER, OHIO.
BUTTON-HOLE CUTTER.
sPZElCIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 384,710, dated June 19, 1888.
Application filed February 23, 1888. Serial No. 264,880. (No model.)
To azz whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PETERS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Hole Gutters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a simplified construction in button-hole cutters; and the nature thereof consists in providing an instrument having movable jaws, one of which is provided with a cutter or knife having an arm formed at right angles therewith, the lower jaw of which carries an adjustable gage having an upwardly-turned flange and a pointer formed upon the upper edge thereof and bent parallel with the said gage, and a bolt passing through the slot in the gage and through the longitudinal slot in the said lower jaw, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by similar letters, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the cutter or knife detached from the instrument.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the upper jaw, which is provided with a slot, at, for receiving the knife or cutter B. The cutter B is provided with an arm, b, formed at right angles to the same, and having a hole formed therein, by means of which the cutter is held firmly in position within the slot at by of metal, and is provided witha slot, d,through which the adjustable bolt E is inserted. A flange, d, is formed upon the gage, against which the edge of the material to be cut and measured is placed. A pointer, F, is formed upon the upper edge of the flange d, and is bent parallel with the gage D, in order that it will come in contactwith the upper surface a of the material, for the purpose of accurately determining the position of the button-holes to be cut. By this construction button-holes may be cut in the materiafat any desired distance by means of the pointer, which is placed upon the first button-hole cut, and the distance between it and the cutter or knife designates the position for the next, and so on until the sufficient number is formed.
Having fully described my invention. what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In a button-hole cutter, the combination of the upper jaw, A,having a slot formed therein, a cutter, B, provided with an arm, b, formed at right angles with the said cutter, a lower jaw, O, carrying an adjustable gage, D, having a flange, d, and a pointer, F, formed upon the upper edge thereof and bent parallel with the said gage, and a bolt, E, passing through the .slot in the gage and through the longitudinal slot in the lower jaw, substantially as herein described and set forth.
In testimony whereofjI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. PETERS.
