Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHAN NADOOLMAN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn; in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tailors Chalk- Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for use by tailors as chalk holders, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed for use in holding two separate pieces of chalk in parallel positions whereby parallel lines may be made in drafting or drawing patterns and any other class of work; a further object being to provide a device of the class specified which may also be used for the purpose of holding pencils by means of which parallel lines may be drawn in the operation of drawing or drafting patterns and similar work.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved chalk holding device; Fig. 2 a side view thereof; Fig. 3 a plan view thereof; and, Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the device used as a pencil holder; and, Fig. 5 a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.

In the practice of my invention, I provide a device of the class specified which comprises two bars a and b composed of heavy sheet metal or similar material, one of which is slidably mounted on the other. In the form of construction shown, the bar b is slidably mounted on the bar a and the bar a is provided with side keepers a which hold the bar b in place thereon, and said bar b' is provided with a longitudinal slot b through which is passed a set screw 0 which also passes through the bar a and by means of which the bar b may be held at any desired point of adjustment on the bar a.

The bar a is provided at the front end with two U- shaped spring clamps a which open downwardly and the bar b is provided with two similar U-shaped clamps b which open downwardly, and in practice a piece of suitably shaped chalk d is inserted into each set of the clamps a and b as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in this way two pieces of chalk may be conveniently held for the purpose of making parallel lines on any desired material in the operation of drafting or drawing patterns or designs, or in making marks upon cloth if desired, and by reason of the fact that the bar b is adjustable on the bar a the distance between the clamps a and b may be regulated as will be readily understood as may also the distance'between the parallel lines to be drawn.

The clamps a and b or the front side portions there of, are provided with vertically arranged slots a and b and I also provide means for holding a pencil between said clamps as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, said means consisting of tubular clamps e open at one side and provided at the open side with projecting flanged jaws 6 adapted to be inserted into the slots a and b of the corresponding clamps a and b and with this construction pencils f may be held in the same manner as the separate pieces of chalk d and parallel lines may be drawn with said pencils by manipulating the device in the same manner as when the pieces of chalk are employed.

It will be observed that the bars a and b form a handle for the device and in practice the clamps a and bar a are preferably stamped from a single sheet of material as are also the clamps b and bar I), and my invention is not limited to the exact details of the construction herein shown and described, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the class described, comprising two bars or handle members one of which is adjustable on the other, said bars or handle members being provided at their corresponding ends each with downwardly directed spring clamps adapted to hold pieces of chalk.

2. A device of the class described, comprising two bars or handle members one of which is adjustable on the other,

said bars or handle members being provided at their corresponding ends each with downwardly directed spring clamps adapted to hold pieces of chalk, and means whereby pencils may also be held by said clamps.

3. A device of the class described, comprising two bars or handle members adjustably connected, said bars or handle members being provided at their corresponding ends each with a pair of U-shaped clamps which open in the same direction, the said pairs of clamps being parallel.

4. A device of'the class described, comprising two bars or handlemembers adjustably connected, said bars or handle members being provided at their corresponding -ends each with a pair of Ushaped clamps which open in the same direction, the said pairs of clamps being parallel, and one clamp of each pair being provided in one side thereof with means whereby a pencil holder may be connected therewith, 1

5. A device of the class described, comprising two bars or handle members one of which is adjustable on theother, said bars or handle members being provided at their corresponding ends with downwardly directed chalk holders.

6. A device of the class described, comprising two bars or handle members one of which is adjustable on the other, said bars or handle members being provided at their corresponding ends with downwardly directed chalk holders, and a pencil holder adapted to be secured to or in said chalk holders.
