PATENT QFFICE.
ERIK J OHANSON, OF OURAY, COLORADO.
CHALK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.763,060, dated June 21, 1904.
Application filed pril 13, 1904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERIK JoHANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ouray, in the county of Ouray and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to chalk-holders '5. 0., devices such as used by tailors to mark cloth; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous chalk holder hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
' In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chalk-holder constituting the present and preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse-section of the holder, taken through the vertical center thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section of the holder, taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 looking downwardly; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the slide of the holder, on an enlarged scale, as the same appears when removed from the holder-body.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to Which- A is the body of my novel chalk-holder. The said body is formed of a piece of sheet metal which is bent into U shape in vertical section, so as to form jaws a, having a tendency to spring outwardly, and is provided at the lower ends of the said jaws a with inturned gripping portions and on the side edges of the jaws a with inturned flanges c, the latterto prevent the edges from scratching the fingers when the body is held in the hand.
B is the slide, which has for its purpose to clamp the jaws a of the bodyAagainst apiece of chalk or other marking substance (1, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The said slide is preferably made up of parallel pieces (Z, having books a at their ends to receive the side edges of the jaws a of the body, pieces f, arranged alongside the pieces cl to lend stiffness and strength thereto, bars g, arranged alongside the pieces f and provided at their ends with depending portions 7L, and a piece of sheet metal '4' wrapped around the pieces (Z and e and Serial No. 202.997. (IIo modeL) the bars 9, so as to hold said pieces and bars together after the manner shown in Figs. 2 to 4:. The depending portions 72, of the two bars 9 diverge, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to receive the piece of chalk between them, and the inner idle edge of the piece of chalk bears against the smooth surface of the wrapping-piece 2',
and hence is not liable to be rendered blunt by its contact with the slide.
In the practical use of my novel chalk-holder the piece of chalk is placed between the gripping portions on the jaws a of the-body A, while the slide B is on the upper portion of the body, and the slide is then moved down on the body to the position shown in Fig. 2, when it will serve to force the said gripping portions inwardly against the piece of chalk, and thereby securely fix the piece of chalk in the body. To remove the piece of chalk from the body, as when it is desired to reverse the piece of chalk or replace the same with a new piece, it is simply necessary to move the slide B up on the body A, when the piece of chalk will be released from the jaws a, this because of the tendency of the said jaws to spring outwardly, as before mentioned.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that while my novel device is very simple and inexpensive it constitutes a chalk-holder which 1 may be conveniently held in the hand and one in which a piece of chalk may be quickly and easily secured and from which a piece of chalk may be as readily removed when worn out or broken. I
I have entered into a detailed description of the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a definite understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction shown and described, as such changes or modifications may be made'in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a chalk-holder, the combination of a body formed of a piece of sheet metal bent into U shape in vertical section, whereby it is provided with clamping-jaws which have a tendency to spring outwardly, and a slide movable vertically between the jaws of the body, and having hook-shaped end portions receiving the side edges of said jaws.
2. In a chalk-holder, the combination of a body having clamping-jaws, and a slide movable in the body, between the clamping-jaws thereof, and having hook-shaped end portions receiving the side edges of the jaws.
3. In a chalk-holder, the combination of a body having clamping-jaws, and a slide engaging and movable between the said jaws, and having a smooth under side, and also having diverging depending portions.
4:. In a chalk-holder, the combination of a body formed of a piece of sheet metal bent into U shape, whereby it is provided with clamping-jaws which have a tendency to spring outwardly, and a slide movable in the body, be-
nesses.
